FROSTBURG, Md. – Three players posted double-doubles as the Gettysburg College volleyball team extended its win streak to double-figures with a 3-2 non-conference victory at Frostburg State University Wednesday night.
For the second consecutive week, Gettysburg (10-0) was pushed to five sets. The Bullets ran off the final three points to win the opening set 28-26, but Frostburg (5-5) bounced right back with a 25-20 decision. A lop-sided 25-13 decision for the visitors followed in set three. The Bobcats tied the contest with a 25-21 win in set four, but Gettysburg jumped out to the early lead in the decisive fifth set and clinched the win with a 15-10 decision.
Five of the eight all-time meetings between Gettysburg and Frostburg have gone the full five sets. The Bullets have posted double-figure win streaks to start each of the last two seasons. In 2017, the team opened by winning its first 12 contests.
Three Bullets hit double-figure kills and four put up double-figure digs. Junior
Kasey Higgins (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) led the attack with 15 kills, while freshman
Jordyn Horowitz (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) and junior
Francesca Garison (Metuchen, N.J./John F. Kennedy Memorial) recorded 13 and 10 kills, respectively. Horowitz and Garison also notched double-doubles, the former posting 16 digs and the latter tallying a dozen digs.
Freshman setter
Sarah Ellis (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) turned in season highs with 36 assists and 12 digs. Junior
Caroline Sequeira (Millington, N.J./Watchung Hills) put up 30 or more digs for the second consecutive match, finishing two shy of her career high with 36. It was the first time a Gettysburg player recorded back-to-back 30-dig efforts since
Steph Vial '07 went for 35 and 34 in consecutive outings against Swarthmore College and McDaniel College in 2006.
Junior
Melissa Tringali (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane) totaled 11 digs and classmate
Shannon Fletcher (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) had a hand in four total blocks.
Biamba Tshitenge led Frostburg with 13 kills, while Cori Smothers recorded 41 digs.
Gettysburg begins Centennial Conference play at home against Washington College this Saturday, Sept. 15, at 1 p.m.
