Volleyball Completes Perfect Opening Weekend

Bullets sweep past Penn State Harrisburg, Meredith

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College volleyball team polished off a perfect opening weekend with two more sweeps on the second day of the Battlefield Classic inside Bream Gym.

After beating Gallaudet University and Messiah College in six-straight sets Friday, Gettysburg (4-0) shut out Penn State Harrisburg (1-3) and Meredith College (2-2) on Saturday. The Bullets beat Penn State Harrisburg 31-29, 25-23, and 25-10 before ending the day with 25-15, 25-18, and 25-13 decisions against Meredith. It marks the first time since 1998 that the Orange and Blue have opened a campaign with four consecutive sweeps.

The opening set against Penn State featured 10 ties and five lead changes. The Nittany Lions had the Bullets on their heels with a 24-22 lead, but a block by junior Kasey Higgins (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) and Faith Adams (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) and a kill by Higgins tied the set. Gettysburg closed the marathon victory with the final three points, including two on kills by junior Francesca Garison (Metuchen, N.J./John F. Kennedy Memorial).

Higgins paced the Bullets with a dozen kills, while sophomore Allie Stranick (Havertown, Pa./Merion Mercy) posted 10 kills and nine digs. Junior Melissa Tringali (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane) led the defense with 13 digs.

Gettysburg trailed just once in its three-set sweep over Meredith. Junior Shannon Fletcher (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and freshman Jordyn Horowitz (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) led the way with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Garison and Stranick each produced eight kills with the former adding a dozen digs. Ellis put up 22 assists. Junior Caroline Sequeira (Millington, N.J./Watchung Hills) put up 10 digs.

Both Stranick and Garison were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Gettysburg visits Catholic University for a non-conference match on Wednesday, Sept. 5, at 7 p.m.
