WASHINGTON, D.C. – The streak of sweeps came to an end, but the Bullets kept their perfect record intact with a hard-fought 3-2 victory at Catholic University Wednesday night.
Gettysburg (5-0) had swept its previous four matches this season, but Catholic (4-1) forced the Bullets to go the distance on their court. Each of the five contests was decided by four points or less with the visitors winning sets one (25-22), three (25-22), and five (15-11). The Cardinals won the second (25-21) and fourth sets (27-25).
The war raged through the first three sets as Gettysburg jumped out to a 2-1 lead. The fourth decision featured as many lead changes as the other four sets combined (10) in addition to 16 ties. Gettysburg fought off the clinching point twice before the Cardinals closed with the final two points.
Freshman
Jordyn Horowitz (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) posted three of her match-high 18 kills in the opening five points as Gettysburg burst out to a 9-3 lead in the decisive fifth set. The Cardinals closed to three late in the match before junior
Francesca Garison (Metuchen, N.J./John F. Kennedy Memorial) shut the door with a match-clinching kill.
Horowitz recorded double-figure kills for the second consecutive match and finished with an attack percentage of .382. Garison posted a double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs, while junior
Kasey Higgins (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) and sophomore
Allie Stranick (Havertown, Pa./Merion Mercy) each posted nine kills. Stranick also tallied 14 digs.
Sophomore
Sophie Gelling (West Chester, Pa./Downingtown Stem Academy) had a hand in nine total blocks. Junior
Caroline Sequeira (Millington, N.J./Watchung Hills) tied her personal high with 30 digs, while classmate
Melissa Tringali (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane) put up 10 digs.
B.N. and freshman
Sarah Ellis (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) combined for 52 assists and 15 digs.
Patricia Martinez paced Catholic with 13 kills. Caroline Kelly totaled 33 digs and Maria Gonzales posted 43 assists and 16 digs.
Gettysburg travels to Lycoming College for a two-day tournament Friday and Saturday. The Bullets meet Clarks Summit University and Lycoming at 6 and 8 p.m., respectively, on the opening day followed by SUNY Cortland and Dickinson College at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively on Saturday.
