WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Gettysburg College volleyball team broke out the broom twice on Friday at the Lycoming College Tournament, first sweeping past Clarks Summit University before taking down the host Warriors in three sets.
Gettysburg (7-0), which has swept six of its first seven foes this season, totaled 19 service aces in beating Clarks Summit (1-4) 25-11, 25-20, and 25-9. It was the Bullets' best serving performance since totaling 20 aces against Ramapo College in 2012. The Orange and Blue closed the night with a 3-0 win (25-17, 25-22, 25-18) over Lycoming (4-2).
In the opening match, Gettysburg scored 11 of the first 12 points to establish an early tone against Clarks Summit. The Defenders bounced back in set two and held a 20-16 lead. The Bullets rattled off the set's final nine points, closing on an ace by junior
Melissa Tringali (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane). Gettysburg never trailed in the finale and closed things out with the match's final six points.
Six players recorded an ace against Clarks Summit with senior
Rachel Gombatz (Farmington, Conn./Farmington) leading the way with five. Gombatz also put up 22 assists. Sophomore
Faith Adams (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) posted four aces in the first set, while junior
Sierra Conboy (Ventura, Calif./Ventura) and sophomore
Maddie Buerle (New Providence, N.J./Union Catholic) each recorded three aces. Buerle paced the team with eight digs.
Freshman
Jordyn Horowitz (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) led a balanced attack with eight kills against Clarks Summit.
Gettysburg pounded down at least 11 kills in all three sets against Lycoming. The Warriors jumped out to an early lead in set two, but the Bullets overcame some early struggles on the attack to score four of the final five points to clinch the frame. Gettysburg hit .353 on the attack and led from start-to-finish in the third set.
Sophomore
Allie Stranick (Havertown, Pa./Merion Mercy) notched her second double-double of the season with 16 kills and 10 digs. Junior
Francesca Garison (Metuchen, N.Y./John F. Kennedy Memorial) tallied nine kills, while classmate
Caroline Sequeira (Millington, N.J./Watchung Hills) put up 14 digs.
Gettysburg wraps up play in Williamsport against SUNY Cortland and Dickinson College at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively, on Saturday.
