SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Gettysburg College opened its match at Susquehanna University on a winning note, but the River Hawks took the next three sets to walk away with a 3-1 victory in non-conference volleyball action Wednesday night.
Gettysburg (12-2) never trailed in the opening set and broke off an 8-3 closing run to win 25-20. Susquehanna (10-6) took the next two frames 25-19 and 25-16 before a back-and-forth battle in the fourth set. The two teams were tied 21-21 following a kill by junior
Francesca Garison (Metuchen, N.J./John F. Kennedy Memorial), but the River Hawks closed with four of the final five points to win 25-22.
Junior
Kasey Higgins (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) paced the Bullets with 10 kills. Junior
Shannon Fletcher (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) tallied six kills and a pair of aces, while Garison finished with five kills and 11 digs.
Junior
Melissa Tringali (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane) put up a career-high 21 digs to lead the Gettysburg defense. Sophomore
Allie Stranick (Havertown, Pa./Merion Mercy) posted 18 digs.
Freshman
Sarah Ellis (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) contributed 22 assists and five digs.
Hannah Lyons led Susquehanna with 18 kills. Five River Hawks posted 10 or more digs with Lizzie Herestofa leading the way with 20. Lindsey Pugh posted 43 assists and 15 digs.
Gettysburg returns to its Centennial Conference schedule with a road trip to Bryn Mawr College this Saturday. The match is slated for 5 p.m.
