Gettysburg Sweeps CC Twinbill at McDaniel

Gettysburg defeats McDaniel 5-3, 10-1 (5 inn.)

WESTMINSTER, Md. Junior Taylor Doi (Foster City, Calif./San Mateo) recorded her 100th career hit and the Gettysburg College softball team swept Centennial Conference foe McDaniel College for the second-straight year on Tuesday.

Gettysburg (14-16, 4-6 CC) took the opener on the strong batting performance by senior Meredith Taylor (Hamilton, N.J./Northern Burlington) as she produced a two-run home run and three RBI to help seal game one 5-3. In the nightcap, the Bullets jumped out in front with four runs in the first inning on the way to a 10-1 win over McDaniel (19-12, 6-6 CC) in five innings.

Taylor set the tone early in the opener by knocking out a two-run homer in the top of the first inning and ripping an RBI single in the third. Doi registered her 100th career hit in her second at bat to collect an RBI single up the middle to drive sophomore Emily Colline (Bridgewater, N.J./Immaculata) across the plate to make it 4-0.

The Green Terror responded in the bottom of the frame with a two-RBI double from Megan Coyle and an RBI single by Megan Horsey to come within one (4-3).

Junior Rachel Julie (Elmsford, N.Y./Briarcliff) added the final tally of game one in the sixth when she posted an RBI double to left center to close out the opener with a victory.

Senior Morgan Clauser (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington) pitched a complete game to earn her 11th win from the circle this season.

Doi went 2-for-4 from the plate with an RBI, while Julie gathered a double and RBI, and junior Sarahrose Jonik (Glenmoore, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) notched two runs scored and a hit.

The Bullets busted out the bats in the nightcap as the team scored 10 runs on 12 hits with the first four batters collecting a hit to open the game.

Taylor started the Bullets scoring rally as she logged in an RBI single to center field, bringing in Jonik to home plate. Colline, who was batting cleanup, did just that as she pounded a three-run home run to push the Orange and Blue ahead 4-0 after the first inning.

Gettysburg exploded with six runs on six hits in the top of the fifth with Taylor corralling her second two-run dinger of the day to start the scoring spurt. Sophomore Shelby Baker (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) hit an RBI double, junior Liz Cowell (Verona, N.J./Mount Saint Dominic) knotted an RBI single, and Jonick concluded the scoring by providing a two-RBI single to left center.

The Green Terror never had many opportunities to score as the Bullets strong defensive efforts forced two three up, three down situations.

Freshman Skylar Spinner (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) tossed a complete game, allowing just one run (unearned) on three hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

Taylor went 3-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and a home run, while Colline went 2-for-3 with three RBI, a double, homer, and run. Jonik added two hits, two RBI, and a run.
