GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College softball team capped the season with a sweep against Centennial Conference opponent Washington College Saturday on Senior Day.
The Orange and Blue recognized its three seniors -
Sophia Blasius (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey),
Morgan Clauser (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington), and
Meredith Taylor (Hamilton, N.J./Northern Burlington) prior to the second game. Clauser finished the day with a total of 11 strikeouts and Taylor went 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBI, and a run scored in game two. Clauser now claims the second single-season spot at Gettysburg with 130 strikeouts.
Kristy Rubino '07 holds the single-season record with 195 strikeouts.
Gettysburg (17-18-1, 7-8-1 CC) maintained the lead in the opener to secure the 4-2 win. The Bullets busted out three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take the 3-2 decision against Washington (10-29, 3-13 CC) in the nightcap.
Junior
Sarahrose Jonik (Glenmoore, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) scored the first tally in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead in the opener.
An RBI single by Leah Stokes tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning, but the Bullets responded in the bottom of the frame as junior
Taylor Doi (Foster City, Calif./San Mateo) regained the lead with an RBI single to right field.
RBI singles by sophomore
Shelby Baker (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) and sophomore
Emily Colline (Bridgewater, N.J./Immaculata) in the bottom of the fifth inning pushed the Bullets lead 4-1.
With two outs, the visitors added another run in the top of the seventh, but the next batter popped up to the pitcher, giving Gettysburg the 4-2 victory.
Colline went 2-for-2, while Baker notched two RBI. Clauser tossed a complete game, allowing seven hits, two runs, two walks, and striking out six. The team finished with six stolen bases.
The Shorewomen threatened early with runners in scoring position at second and third base in the nightcap. The visitors used that advantage to score off a sacrifice fly for an early 1-0 lead.
The first three batters for the Bullets each produced a hit to open the bottom of the first inning, which played huge dividends. Taylor pounded a perfect three-RBI triple down the right field line to allow Jonik and junior
Rachel Julie (Elmsford, N.Y./Briarcliff) to cross the plate for the 3-1 lead.
The next several innings were quite by both teams until an RBI single by Rachel DiMarcello in the top of the seventh cut the deficit down to one. However, the hopes for a rally was demolished by the Bullets as the defense registered a pop up and a line out to sweep Washington in its regular season finale.
Gettysburg will be hosting Haverford College on Sunday at 4 p.m. to finish its tied game from two weeks ago.
