Fords Top Bullets in Four

Haverford downs Gettysburg 3-1

GETTYSBURG, Pa.  – Despite the chants and stomps from a strong contingent of Gettysburg faithful, Haverford College overcame a rough third set to dispatch the host Bullets in four sets in a Centennial Conference volleyball confrontation inside Bream Gym on Saturday afternoon.

Match Highlights
  • First Set: Gettysburg grabbed the upper-hand in the early going and took a 9-6 lead on an attack error by the Fords. Haverford came back to tie the match 10-10 and eventually pulled in front 13-12 on a kill by Kosyagin. Gettysburg called a pair of timeouts to try to regain the momentum, the last coming with the hosts trailing 21-16. After an exchange of points, the Fords ran off the final three points with a block by Hunsberger and Taylor Jones sealing the win.
  • Second Set: Haverford held the lead throughout the second set. The Fords took a 12-6 lead following a 5-0 run that featured three kills by Kosyagin. Gettysburg managed to pull within three (13-10) on a kill by Horowitz before Haverford ran off three quick points to force a timeout by the hosts. The Bullets would get no closer than three points for the rest of the set.
  • Third Set: Gettysburg pulled things together and revved up the home crowd with a dominating third set. The Bullets knocked down 16 kills, while Haverford tallied eight hitting errors and a hitting percentage of .040. Gettysburg made its big move at 12-9, running off 12 of the next 13 points and taking a 24-10 lead on an overpass smash by Biggs. After a pair of points by the Fords, Biggs polished off the win with another kill set up by Ellis.
  • Fourth Set: The crowd remained vocal in the early stages of the fourth set as the hosts strolled out to a 6-3 lead. Five-straight points by the Fords quelled the noise, although Gettysburg remained within striking distance and cut the deficit down to one (13-12) on a kill by Lugar. Haverford went on an 11-2 run to gain match point at 24-14. Hunsberger provided the final blow with a kill.
 
By the Numbers
  • Haverford and Gettysburg were busy at the net combining for 326 attack attempts, 55 attack errors, 90 kills, and 19 team blocks.
  • Both Kuba-McCoy and Ellis set new personal highs for digs, while O'Leary put up at least 20 digs for the eighth time this season.
  • Gettysburg posted double-figure blocks for the fourth time this fall. Bayer has posted at least three total blocks in each of the last seven contests.
  • Despite the loss, Gettysburg remains locked into the No. 5 spot in the conference standings heading into the final week of play. The top five teams at the end of the regular season qualify for the conference tournament.
 
Where the Series Stands Now
Gettysburg holds a 25-15 lead in the all-time series with Haverford. The Fords have won the last two meetings and five of the last seven overall.

Gettysburg hosts McDaniel College in its final regular season home match on Wednesday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m.
