How it Happened
First Half: The environment was electric and the match was physical from the start as neither team produced a shot on goal until the 19:13 marker. Bonnie Shea headed the ball towards the net, but it was deflected away as Cunningham made the incredible diving save to keep the Blue Jays off the scoreboard. The Bullets attempted four shots with two on goal in the first 33 minutes of action as freshman Jalia Musah (Garu Tempane, Ghana Millbrook School [N.Y.]) and Bedell took back-to-back shots with both being turned aside by Caitlin Hendricks. Gettysburg's defense was tested often by Johns Hopkins offensive attacks and halted any opportunities until the Blue Jays struck in the 39th minute. Emma Bocaneegra punched the ball into the back of the net to put Johns Hopkins ahead 1-0. The score would stay 1-0 at intermission.
Second Half: After dishing the assist in the 3-2 overtime victory two years ago, Bedell worked her way down the left side of the field and knocked the ball into the lower right corner for the equalizer 18 seconds into the opening half. Cunningham continued to make it tough for the Blue Jays as she stopped another great attempt in the 61st minute. Freshman Ashley Carbonier (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) had the opportunity to tie the game up once again as she attempted the shot, but Hendricks made the save with 22 minutes remaining. Less than a minute later, the ball was deflected off the hands of Cunningham and Johns Hopkins Abigail Gerdes came in to tap the ball into the net to regain the lead 2-1. Cunningham continued to dominate between the pipes as she made another specular save in the 77th minute to keep it a one-goal match. Gettysburg did not back down and continued to battle, having some opportunities in front of the net in the final seconds, but were unable to push it in. Junior Grace Slevin (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox) took the final shot on goal with 41 seconds left, and unfortunately, it sailed wide, giving the visitors the 2-1 win.
