How it Happened
First Half: In the battle of two of the top CC defenses, Gettysburg and McDaniel combined for eight shots in the opening half. Green Terror Kiersten Crowley took the first shot, but Cunningham made the dive for the save four minutes into the half. Muskus rocketed a long shot from the left side of the field two minutes later, but Katherine Carstensen jumped straight up for the stop. Carstensen also stopped another opportunity from Gettysburg at the 24:02 marker from senior
Emma Bedell (Chatham, N.J. Mount Saint Mary). Neither team corralled a shot on goal until two minutes to go in the half. A Gettysburg foul was called just outside the top of the box, and McDaniel's Isabela Soares drifted the shot to the right side to put them ahead 1-0.
Second Half: The Bullets controlled much of the second half, taking seven shots and six corner kicks while holding McDaniel to just one shot and no corner kicks. The Orange and Blue saw plenty of early opportunities at the net, with the first coming from off a corner kick five minutes in as junior defender
Kelly Gaudian (Arlington, Va. Washington-Lee) tapped it towards the goal, but it was deflected off McDaniel's Katherine Carstensen. Junior
Molly O'Shea (Reading, Pa./Wilson) collected the rebound and took a try of her own with it being blocked by a defender. At the 55:43 and 69:19 markers, respectively, Gettysburg saw its best chances as well, with one from Muskus that nearly went in that hit the post and the other from Musah, who shot long-range from the right side, that was stopped by Carstensen. Gettysburg was unable to punch one into the back of the net, giving McDaniel the 1-0 victory.
By the Numbers
- Gettysburg outshot McDaniel 10-6 and held the 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
- The Bullets have only allowed three goals against this season. McDaniel has shut out every team, including then top-ranked Messiah University last Wednesday.
- Gettysburg ranks ninth in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division III Region V poll.
All-Time Series
The Bullets hold a 28-7-1 all-time series record against the Green Terror that dates back to 1988. McDaniel has won five of the last 10 meetings.
