How It Happened…
- First Half: CNU's Tanner Dail took the first shot attempt of the match 14 minutes in that was stopped by Muhic. The Bullets fired back at the goal less than a minute later by freshman Aidan Muller (Fish Hoek, South Africa/Putnam Science Academy), but his shot sailed high. It would be Gettysburg's second shot at the goal that would be golden as Fife headed the ball perfectly into the net off a long throw in from the right side of the field from Tennant to put the Orange and Blue in front 1-0 with 23 minutes to go. Fife had another great look at the net with a header, but it went high with four minutes left in the half. CNU outshot Gettysburg 9-3, but the Bullets held the 1-0 lead at the half.
- Second Half: Gettysburg had some great chances at the net early into the second half with one from senior Jonathan Molina (Adelphi, Md./Dematha Catholic) and sophomore Zion Williams (Glenn Dale, Md./Sidwell Friends). CNU pulled even in the 71st minute when Kobe Smith and Owen Burnett sent passes to Chris Schram, who shot into the right side of the goal. Muhic kept the match tied with a save in the 85th minute off a shot from CNU's Tanner Dail.
- Overtime: In a physical match from the start, the only shot in the first overtime came from the Captains Lincoln Kickbush in the 97th minute that went wide. Both squads continued to battle it out into the second overtime as freshman Aidan Giquinto (Medford Lakes, N.J./Shawnee) drilled a shot that went high two minutes in while Muhic turned aside an attempt in the 105th minute to finish the match with the first tie of the season.
By the Numbers
- CNU, the reigning 2021 USA South East Division champions and 2019 NCAA Division III participants finished with the advantages in shots (17-7) and corner kicks (7-3).
- Fife has recorded at least one goal in each of the first two games this season.
- Tennant has dished an assist in the first two games.
Where the Series Stands Now
The Bullets and the Captains now sit with a 1-1-2 all-time record. The two teams played against each other for the third time ever in 2019 in Gettysburg with CNU taking the victory. Gettysburg first beat CNU 2-1 in 1999.
