Johns Hopkins shoots past Gettysburg in conference-opening win

THE SKINNY STORY
Johns Hopkins, ranked 10th in the preseason d3hoops.com poll, outscored Gettysburg 28-16 over the final 11 minutes of the first half to build a 15-point halftime lead en route to a 73-44 victory in the Centennial Conference opener for both teams.

THE LEADERS
Rassoul Abakar (Cameroon/Notre Dame Fairfield [Conn.]) led the Bullets with five points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots.
Carl Schaller (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) netted a team-best nine points.

FOR THE FOES
• Carson James led the Blue Jays with 25 points on 9 of 18 shooting. He hit 5 of 8 from behind the 3-point line.
• Tom Quarry and John Windley added 12 points each.

THE REST OF THE STORY
• The two teams slogged their way through the first 8:45 of the game. The stretch featured two ties and five lead changes – the final of which came on a Sidney Thybulle putback to put Johns Hopkins in front, 9-8. Back-to-back triples from Jayden Nixon and Carson James around an Elijah Williams (Washington, D.C./Sidwell Friends) layup stretched the lead to 15-10 just over three minutes later. Another Thybulle layup with 4:00 showing gave the Blue Jays their first double-digit lead at 24-13. The Bullets closed to within nine on two Colin Farrell (Matawan, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) free throws 49 seconds later but James scored the next five Hopkins points to extend the lead to 31-18 with 1:18 remaining. The lead swelled to as large as 16 en route to the 37-22 halftime lead.
• After Ethan Bartlett and Carl Schaller traded baskets to start the second half, a Tom Quarry dunk started an 11-1 run that extended the lead to 51-25 with 13:19 to play to all but seal the victory. The advantage never dropped below 20 en route to the 29-point victory.

THE INSIDE STORY
• Johns Hopkins finished with a 43-31 advantage in rebounding.
• The Blue Jays shot 43.6 percent for the game while holding the Bullets to 29.3 percent, holding their hosts to a season-low scoring output.
Akim Joseph (Port-au-Prince, Haiti/Notre Dame Fairfield [Conn.]) registered a season-best seven points off the bench.
