Finding Success at a New Address

Women's Cross Country

Finding success at a new address

"Being a senior in high school…I really just wanted to run at the fastest school I could…. Now, I see there's a lot more that goes into it." – sophomore Ava Crawford, Swarthmore, Pa.
"It's hard to think about transferring when you've already got to know one school… But, I'm in a much better place and I fit in much better here." – sophomore Kathryn Hopkins, Taneytown, Pa.
"It's a daunting process but…you just have to trust the process that you're going to end up where you need to be." – senior Amy Cantrell, Haley, Idaho

When a high school senior – and specifically an athlete – is deciding where to continue her education, any number of reasons can ultimately be the deciding factor. It's different for everyone. It could be size, location, legacy, or just a connection made on a visit.

Then there are times, though – three months, six months, a year later – that the individual realizes it was the ultimately the wrong choice and goes through the process of making another decision.

That decision starts with: "Am I going to transfer?" And if that answer is yes, then the process of deciding where starts all over again.

There members of the 2022 women's cross country team knew that feeling and ultimately decided to change their address to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

Amy Cantrell moved east from Haley, Idaho after starting her collegiate career at Montana State University.

Ava Crawford, from Swarthmore, Pa., originally chose Centennial Conference-foe Johns Hopkins.

Kathryn Hopkins ended up closer to her hometown of Taneytown, Md., after spending a year at University of Maryland.

The trio led a resurgence of the Bullets women's cross country program, bringing a variety of experiences to a squad with a large, talented freshman class. Gettysburg posted its best score on a conference championship meet since 2009 and best regional finish in a decade.

Cantrell, Crawford, and Hopkins all ran in team's top spot at some point this fall. They continued that success into the start of the indoor track and field season with a program record and two race wins.

They each knew it was the right decision the second time around. Hear the three of them tell the story in their own words of how they found success when they found a new address in Gettysburg.
