Meet Highlights
- Cox and Pickering set the new school standards in the preliminaries Saturday morning. Pickering was the first to achieve the feat in the 400 individual medley, and he punctuated the race with a final 50 split of 27.12 to post an overall time of 4:05.05. He improved his lifetime best by over two seconds and shattered the previous record of 4:06.58 set by Jack Freeman at the 2019 CC Championship.
- Cox was determined to become the first Bullet to break 50 seconds in the 100 back this season and he finally achieved the feat Saturday morning. After splitting 50.11 leading off the 200 medley relay two days ago, the junior powered his way to the wall and left the field in his wake with a time of 49.49, more than half of a second faster than the former school record of 50.00 set by Mike Harmon in 2015. Cox also recorded his first national qualifying time, sliding under the NCAA B cut of 49.91.
- As the top seed in the finals, Cox just missed his prelim time with another sub-50 second outburst. The junior hit the wall in just 23.81 in his first 50 and then cruised to the gold medal with a mark of 49.52, edging out Ben Wilson of Washington College by almost one second. The 2020 CC 100 back champ, Cox is the first Gettysburg men's swimmer to win the event twice in his career.
- Like his junior teammate, Pickering just missed his prelim standard during the 400 IM finals. The senior went out with a quick butterfly, but slipped to the back of the pack at the midpoint of the race. He made up ground during the breaststroke and closed with a strong freestyle segment to grab fourth with a time of 4:05.09.
- Senior Duncan Proxmire (McLean, Va./Langley) added another medal to his resume with a third-place finish in the 200 freestyle. The senior maintained his position throughout the race and finished just behind Franklin & Marshall's Chris Schiavone and Swarthmore's Ben Freeman with a personal-best time of 1:40.73. Proxmire, who was the runner-up in the 500 free yesterday, picked up his sixth career individual medal at the conference meet and his first in the 200 free. He is a two-time silver medalist in the 1650 free, which he will swim on Sunday.
- Pickering wasn't the only Bullet charging through the water in the 400 IM. Sophomores Luke McKenna (Collegeville, Pa/Spring-Ford Area) and Charlie Cross (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) joined the senior in the finals. McKenna also finished under the old program record and posted a PR of 4:05.87 in the finals, second only to Pickering in school history. He finished sixth overall, while Cross finished eighth with the sixth-fastest time at 4:08.80. In the consolation heat, freshman Mason Dillon (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) dropped four seconds off his prelim time and logged the fifth-fastest mark in school history at 4:08.47.
- Senior Sam Nonemaker (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) and Cox both qualified for the finals of the 100 fly. Nonemaker just missed his PR in the prelims (50.85) and finished sixth in the finals at 51.26. With the 100 back race looming, Cox put things in cruise control and placed eighth at 52.17.
- Freshman Trey Mitchell (Rehoboth Beach, Del./Sussex Academy) and sophomore Declan Sheeran (McLean, Va./McLean) earned spots in the finals of the 100 breaststroke. Mitchell turned in the third-fastest time in program history at 57.42 and finished sixth overall, while Sheeran recorded a PR in the prelims (58.03) and finished eighth in the finals at 58.53. Junior Zac Evans (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township) won the consolation final with a time of 58.87.
- Nonemaker, freshman Cort Hobelmann (Nashville, Tenn./Owensboro), sophomore Hunter Sundlun (Richmond, Va./Saint Christopher's School), and Evans teamed up for a fourth-place showing in the 200 free relay (1:24.21).
