FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Gettysburg College (9-7) dropped a pair of non-conference decisions against the University of Mary Washington (16-11) on Saturday. Caitlyn Burch fired a no-hitter against the Bullets in a 3-0 decision in the opening game and then closed out the nightcap with 2.2 scoreless innings for a save in an 8-5 decision.
Gettysburg didn't have much defense against Burch in the opening game, reaching base on an error in the first inning and two walks in the sixth and seventh frames. Burch set down the side in each of the four innings in between and finished with 11 strikeouts in the no-hitter.
The Eagles picked up two runs in the opening inning and tacked on some insurance on a run-scoring double by Emma Schieda in the sixth.
Freshman
Paige Forry (Reading, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) took the loss after pitching six innings and giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits with four strikeouts.
Mary Washington once again dropped two runs in its opening at bat in game two, but Gettysburg came right back with three runs in the top of the second. A pair of fielding miscues contributed to the offense and a sacrifice fly by sophomore
Giovanna Komst (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) put the Bullets in front 3-2.
The Eagles came right back with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Maggie Mrowka brought home two on a double and came around to score on an error to make it 6-3.
Gettysburg pulled within a run thanks to a pair of sac flies in the third and fifth innings, but Mary Washington padded its lead with two unearned runs in the fifth. Burch pitched the final 2.2 innings and surrendered one hit while striking out five.
Freshman
Lauren O'Leary (Manasquan, N.J./Jackson Memorial) went 2-for-4 with a run, while junior
