COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Gettysburg College softball team earned a split in its Centennial Conference season debut at Ursinus College, winning the opener 6-2 behind a complete-game from freshman
Paige Forry (Reading, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) before dropping the nightcap 7-4.
The teams traded runs in the early innings of the opening game with sophomore
Giovanna Komst (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) drawing a lead-off walk and coming around to score on a single by junior
Jess Campana (Brick, N.J./Saint John Vianney) in the top of the first. Komst scored Gettysburg's second run as well, scoring on an error in the third frame.
The Bullets stole in front with Komst once again proving a factor. Sophomore
Bailey Quinn (Hanford, Calif./Robinson) drew a two-out walk and stole second before coming home on a single by her classmate for a 3-2 lead.
Forry settled in after giving up her final run in the third inning and allowed just one more base runner to reach scoring position over the final four frames. With their pitcher dealing, the Bullets padded the lead with three runs in the fifth inning, including two coming home on a single by Quinn with two outs on the board.
Forry improved to 5-3 after tossing seven innings and allowing two runs on eight hits with five strikeouts. Komst finished 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI, while Quinn was 1-for-2 with a walk, run, and two RBI. Campana also posted two hits.
Game two started in similar fashion to the opener with Komst scampering home on a single by Campana for the first run. Ursinus answered right away with three runs in the bottom of the inning and added two more runs in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead.
Gettysburg sliced the deficit down to a run with three runs in the top of the sixth. Freshman
Carlie Goldstein (Verona, N.J./Verona) knocked a two-run double and freshman
Amy Gastright (Upper Marlboro, Md./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes (Va.)) followed with a pinch-hit single to bring in another run and pull the score to 5-4.
The Bears answered with two insurance runs in the bottom of the inning.
The Bullets brought the go-ahead run to the plate after leading the bases in the top of the seventh, but a fly out to right field ended the game.
Junior
Oliva Moser (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) went 4-for-4 with a run. Goldstein finished 2-for-3 with two RBI, while sophomore
Lauren O'Leary (Manasquan, N.J./Jackson Memorial) and
Allegra DeCandia (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) each posted two hits.
