Bullets' Offense Erupts In Sunday Doubleheader Sweep

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg softball team (12-8, 3-1 CC) issued a doubleheader sweep over visiting Franklin & Marshall College (13-13) on Sunday afternoon in Gettysburg, Pa. The Bullets earned a six-inning, 13-4 victory in Game One and completed the sweep in Game Two, besting the Diplomats, 13-5, in a five-inning game. Giovanna Komst (Londonderry, N. H. / Londonderry) had a strong offensive day, recording two-hit games in each contest, totaling four RBI.

Gettysburg combined for 26 runs between the two games, recording double-digit scoring in each game, the first time the Bullets achieved a double-digit run total in a contest since an 11-0 victory over Fitchburg State on Mar. 9.

The Bullets got on the board early in the opening game, plating two runs in the bottom of the first frame behind a two-run single from Olivia Moser (Robbinsville, N. J. / Robbinsville). The offense erupted in the third and fourth innings as Gettysburg combined for nine runs between the two frames, highlighted by another two-run knock from Moser. The junior infielder tripled to right field, collecting her fourth RBI of the game. Elliana Hopple (Collegeville, Pa. / The Episcopal Academy) also provided a clutch run-scoring hit in the fourth inning, a single to left field, scoring two runs. Through four innings, the Bullets held a commanding 11-4 lead.

Paige Forry (Reading, Pa. / Schuylkill Valley) made the Game One start for Gettysburg, pitching all six innings to earn her sixth victory of the season. Forry relinquished the Bullets' two-run lead in the top of the third inning when the Diplomats plated four runs, but the freshman pitcher rebounded, totaling four strikeouts throughout the six innings pitched.

Gettysburg had four players record multi-hit games as Moser and Jess Campana (Brick, N. J. / Saint John Vianney) each registered three-hit performances. Komst made an offensive impact as well, contributing two RBI.

The Bullets continued their offensive momentum in Game Two, scoring five runs in the bottom of the second inning to jump out to a quick and firm advantage over Franklin & Marshall. The highlight of the inning was a two-run home run from Lauren O'Leary (Manasquan, N. J. / Jackson Memorial), the freshman infielder's third long ball of the season. The Bullets continued its offensive display in the bottom of the third inning, increasing their lead to 8-0 following run-scoring hits from Allegra Decandia (Basking Ridge, N. J. / Ridge), Carlie Goldstein (Verona, N. J. / Verona), and Julia Smith (Marydel, Md. / Queen Anne's County).

Megan Hughes (Woodstock, Md. / Marriots Ridge) was the Game Two starter for Gettysburg, earning the win behind five innings pitched, allowing just three hits while striking out three batters. Hughes captured her third win of the season, improving her record to 3-2.

Despite allowing five runs to score in the top of the fifth inning, Gettysburg held on to win, 13-5, completing the doubleheader sweep of the Diplomats. Komst, O'Leary, and DeCandia all recorded multi-RBI performances in the victory.

With the two victories, the Bullets improve its overall record to 12-8 (3-1 Centennial Conference).

Gettysburg will be back in action this Tuesday, Apr. 12, traveling to McDaniel College to take on the Green Terror for a conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
