WESTMINSTER, Md. – The Gettysburg softball team (12-10 overall, 3-3 CC) suffered a pair of losses in a road Centennial Conference doubleheader against McDaniel (13-11, 7-1 CC) on Tuesday afternoon. The Bullets were edged 1-0 in game one before falling 8-4 in game two in a back-and-forth affair.
Olivia Moser (Robbinsville, N. J. / Robbinsville) powered the Gettysburg offense by combing to go 5-of-7 from the plate with one run scored.
Â
After being retired in order during the first two innings of game one,
Allegra DeCandia (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) ripped a single through the left side to lead off the third for the Bullets first base runner.
Giovanna Komst (Londonderry, N. H. / Londonderry) and
Julia Smith (Marydel, Md. / Queen Anne's County) followed with singles to load the bases with one out, but a force out at home along with a fly out ended the threat. The Green Terror broke through in the bottom of the fourth inning with a two-out RBI single and went up 1-0. McDaniel's first batter of the inning drew a walk and advanced to third base off a pair of stolen bases to set up the run being scored.
Â
Smith and Komst once again hit back-to-back singles to put a pair of runners on first and second base with one out in the fifth inning. After a deep foul out allowed the runners to advance to second and third base, a ground out in the next at-bat ended the Bullets rally. Moser led off the sixth for the Bullets with a single before three-straight outs ended the inning. Gettysburg had one last chance in the top of the seventh as Komst kept the game alive by reaching on an error with two outs. Unfortunately for the Bullets, a ground out to the pitcher in the next at-bat preserved the win for the Green Terror in game one.
Â
Paige Forry (Reading, Pa. / Schuylkill Valley) was brilliant on the mound for the Bullets despite the loss as she allowed one earned run on just three hits and struck out five batters while walking one in a full six innings of work.
Â
After a scoreless first inning in game two, the Bullets pushed across their first run of the day in the top of the second when
Lauren O'Leary (Manasquan, N. J. / Jackson Memorial roped a double to right field to score Moser, who led the inning off with a single. Gettysburg game two starting pitcher
Megan Hughes (Woodstock, Md. / Marriots Ridge) worked out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the second inning and the Bullets added to their lead in the top of the third when
Jess Campana (Brick, N. J. / Saint John Vianney) hit a two-out RBI single to make it a 2-0 game. Smith started the Bullets two-out rally by singling to right field and stealing second base.
Â
McDaniel struck back in the bottom half of the third by scoring three runs on just one hit and one error. A pair of walks and a fielding error loaded the bases with one out before a two-run double and a wild pitch put the Green Terror in front. Gettysburg countered with a two-out two-run home run off the bat of
Carlie Goldstein (Verona, N. J. / Verona) in the top of the fourth to take the lead back at 4-3. However, the Green Terror responded yet again to take the lead back with a two-out two-run single to make it a 5-4 game. Gettysburg had chances in both the fifth and sixth inning to potentially take the lead back, but a double play ended the fifth inning, and a shallow foul out stranded the bases loaded in the sixth. McDaniel then tacked on three insurance runs in the sixth inning to go up 8-4 off a single and a two-run home run.
Â
Moser recorded three of her hits in game two while Baily Quinn (Hanford, Calif. Robinson Secondary School) went 2-of-3 from the plate for the Bullets.
Jasmin Herrera (Hollywood Fla., Cooper City) suffered the loss in game two after surrendering the Green Terror's go-ahead runs in the fourth inning in her relief pitching appearance.
Â
The Bullets return home on Saturday, April 16th as they will host Swarthmore for a Centennial Conference doubleheader at Bobby Jones Field starting at 1 p.m.
