CHESTER, Pa. – Sophomore
Holly Ferrara (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) broke the longest-standing women's track and field record in the books with a first-place finish in the javelin at the Swarthmore College Final Qualifier held on the campus of Widener University on Tuesday, May 18.
Ferrara was flirting with the program's 36-year old javelin record throughout the season and came into Tuesday's final regular season event second in program history with a toss of 136 feet, 8 inches at the Millersville Metrics on April 2, just three feet shy of
Denise Johnson's '87 record mark set in 1986.
After her first toss went just over 118 feet, Ferrara exploded off the launching pad on her second attempt with the javelin hitting the ground 144 feet, 7 inches away, more than five feet beyond Johnson's record. Each of her final four throws all eclipsed 134 feet and she easily took top honors at the event by nearly 12 feet.
Ferrara, who won the Centennial Conference title in the javelin on May 8, ranks fifth in Division III and should be headed to the NCAA Division III Championship scheduled for May 26-28 at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio. The official announcement of championship qualifiers will take place this weekend. Gettysburg's last women's track All-American was
Katie Cavanaugh '16 in the 100-meter hurdles in 2016. The program has never featured an All-American in the throwing events.
