THE REST OF THE STORY
• McDaniel used several Gettysburg errors to put the hosts in a 12-6 hole early in the first set and force a Gettysburg timeout. Out of the break, a Gettysburg block by Huegel and Catherine Holtz (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) kicked off an 8-0 run for Gettysburg to go up 14-12. In the stretch, Huegel hit four aces, including three in a row. Gettysburg didn't fall behind the rest of the set, increasing their lead to 18-15 on a McDaniel service error before scoring the next seven points in a row to win set one, 25-15.
• Gettysburg again fell behind early in the second set, trailing the Green Terror 6-2 to start the set. The Bullets used several McDaniel errors to close within one before going on a 3-0 run that was bookended by Huegel and Alycen Radolovic (Willoughby, Ohio/The Beaumont School) kills. A Green Terror kill and block tied the score, 9-all, before Gettysburg again put together five unanswered points, including another string of three consecutive Huegel aces. A McDaniel block made it a 14-10 Gettysburg lead before an Olivia Biggs (Winchester, Va./James Wood) kill started a 6-0 Gettysburg run and a Biggs and Radolovic block capped it. Sophie Nasir (Covina, Calif./St. Lucy's Priory) had two aces in the run. The teams traded points before McDaniel scored three unanswered to close within seven, but a kill by Izzy Lugar (Wilmington, Del./Charter School of Wilmington) and a Radolovic and Huegel block ended set two, 25-16.
• In the final set, Gettysburg was finally the one with the early lead, getting up 7-4 before McDaniel tied the score, 8-all. Gettysburg went on a 7-4 run to take the 15-12 lead, fueled by three Ulrich kills. From there, the Bullets scored five unanswered to get up eight points on the Green Terror. The teams traded points to a 24-15 match points for Gettysburg, who allowed McDaniel to score one more on the match. Gettysburg ended things on a Biggs kill for the 25-16 final set win.
