THE SKINNY STORY
After dropping the first set, Gettysburg battled back to a set two victory, but ultimately Johns Hopkins claimed sets three and four to earn the 3-1 match win.
THE LEADERS
•
Olivia Biggs (Winchester, Va./James Wood) put up six blocks to go with two kills and two digs.
•
Mary Huegel (Marlboro, N.J./Colts Neck) contributed seven blocks and six kills.
•
Kylie Ulrich (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) led offensively with 10 kills.
FOR THE FOES
• Simrin Carlsen led the Blue Jays' attack with 18 kills. She also added 16 digs to notch a double-double.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• Johns Hopkins started off set one on a 7-0 run that forced a Gettysburg timeout mere minutes into the match.
Kylie Ulrich broke up the momentum with a kill after the break, but the Blue Jays used two separate 4-0 runs to keep the score firmly in their favor, getting out to a 19-7 lead. Gettysburg went 3-2 with the Blue Jays to close within 11, but three straight kills by the visitors got them to set point, 24-10. Chidinma Onukwugha killed the ball for Johns Hopkins to win set one, 25-11.
• Set two proved to be much more competitive, as Gettysburg stayed within two points of the Blue Jays for much of the opening stretch. Two straight Johns Hopkins kills saw them stretch their lead to 14-10, but Gettysburg capitalized on five consecutive Blue Jays errors to take their first lead of the game, 15-14. From there, Johns Hopkins went on a 5-4 run to retake the narrow one-point lead, but four straight Gettysburg points, including two consecutive blocks by
Mary Huegel and
Catherine Holtz (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham), allowed the Bullets to establish their biggest lead so far, 23-20. A Bullets service error and Simrin Carlsen kill brought the Blue Jays back within one, but kills by
Brooke Lauletta (Coatesville, Pa./Downingtown East) and Ulrich gave Gettysburg the 25-22 second set win and evened the match score, 1-all.
• Set three saw nine ties, with the latest at 18-all, as both teams used runs of three or four consecutive points to gain the lead, only to give it up not long after. Seven of Gettysburg's 18 points to that point came from JHU errors. From 18-all, the Blue Jays used a Roxy Karrer kill and ace to go up by three points, and made a gap as wide as 24-20 on a Carlsen and Alice Yu block. Gettysburg put together a 3-0 run that included an
Alycen Radolovic (Willoughby, Ohio/The Beaumont School) kill and
Halle Feth (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County) ace, but ultimately a kill by Carlsen decided set three, 25-23.
• It was Gettysburg that held the early advantage in the final set, getting out to a lead of 5-2 on a run that was capped by two consecutive Ulrich and Huegel blocks. Johns Hopkins responded with a 5-0 run to take the lead, 7-5, and the teams went back and forth to an 11-10 Blue Jays lead. From that point, the visitors exploded on a 9-0 run that included eight kills and one Bullets error. Carlsen had four of the eight spikes. Gettysburg countered with two 3-0 runs to close within six, 23-17, but Carlsen had the match-winning ace to take the final set 25-17.
THE INSIDE STORY
• Johns Hopkins held edges in kills (58-31), digs (83-61), and assists (54-28), but the Bullets doubled up on the Blue Jays in blocks, 14-7.
•
Catherine Holtz also contributed six blocks and five kills.
