Gettysburg vies for CC title starting on Friday

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg will host one of the two semifinals of 2023 Centennial Conference (CC) volleyball championship tournament on Friday. Match time is 8 p.m.

In the second year of the new six-team format, a change was made to the format this season and the field will be reseeded for the semifinals. The Bullets (22-4, 9-1 CC), who are the No. 2 seed, and will host the higher-seeded remaining team while top-seeded Johns Hopkins (23-4, 9-1 CC) will host the lower-seeded remaining team in the other semifinal on Friday at 7 p.m.

The first-round matchups will feature third-seeded Franklin & Marshall (18-6, 8-2 CC) hosting sixth-seeded Muhlenberg (14-10, 4-6 CC) and fourth-seeded Swarthmore (15-9, 8-2 CC) hosting fifth-seeded Haverford (11-13, 6-4 CC) on Wednesday. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m.

The semifinal winners will advance to Sunday's championship game, which will be played at the site of the highest remaining seed. Match time will be 1 p.m.

Tickets will be sold for each round of the CC tournament and will be available soon on the Centennial ticketing homepage. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for students age 6 through high school and senior citizens. Children five and under as well as students and staff from conference institutions are free.

The tournament's champion will earn the CC's automatic bid to the 2023 NCAA Division III tournament, slated to begin on Nov. 16. The NCAA field will be announced on Monday at 1 p.m.

The Bullets are seeking their conference-record 12th conference title and first since 2005. It is the 19th tournament appearance for Gettysburg but first time the Orange and Blue has hosted a tournament game since 2008. The Bullets also in search of their 14th NCAA tournament bid.

The lone conference loss for Gettysburg this season came by a 3-1 score at home to Johns Hopkins on Oct. 4. The Bullets defeated Franklin & Marshall 3-1 on the road on Oct. 11, Swarthmore 3-1 on the road on Oct. 14, Haverford 3-0 at home on Oct. 7, and Muhlenberg 3-1 on the road on Sept. 29.

Senior Kylie Ulrich (Lancaster, Pa./Hampstead) leads the attack with 235 kills. She is one of five players with 100 or more kills this season. Ulrich is also fourth on the team in total blocks (44). Junior Sophie Nasir (Covina, Calif./St. Lucy's Priory) has contributed 452 assists and 24 aces. She also has 225 digs.

Senior Chelsea O'Leary (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) leads the defense with 437 digs. Sophomore Mary Huegel (Marlboro, N.J./Colts Neck) leads the conference's top blocking team with 111 blocks. Senior Olivia Biggs (Winchester, Va./James Wood) and junior Catherine Holtz (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) have each added 60 blocks. As a team, the Bullets have 224 blocks (2.46 blocks per set).
