THE SKINNY STORY
In a back-and-forth battle that saw a slew of base runners and pitchers for both teams, Gettysburg pulled out the win over McDaniel, 12-10, in the first game of the home-and-home series.
THE LEADERS
•
David Preziuso (Middletown, Del./Caravel Academy) went 4-for-6, with four runs, one RBI, and one stolen base to lead the Bullets offensively.
•
Matthew Peipher (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Twp.) was 3-for-5 on the day, including one double. He drove in four runs and scored one himself as well.
•
Jack Burke (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) broke the game open for the Bullets with a three-RBI triple in the seventh inning.
•
Connor Sikora (Easton, Pa./Easton Area) came in to close out the game for the Bullets, pitching 2.0 innings with four K's, including the game-ending strikeout.
FOR THE FOES
• Hunter Kelly tallied four extra-base hits, with three doubles and one triple.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• McDaniel started out the game with two runs in their first offensive opportunity. The Green Terror put two on with a fielder's choice and single before a bases-clearing double by Hunter Kelly plated the first runs of the game. McDaniel then made short work of the Bullets in the bottom of the inning, facing only four batters and allowing no hits.
• Both teams sent four to the plate and added one knock each in the second inning.
Mabret Levant (Lakeville, Pa./Wallenpaupack) sent a hard-hit ball to left but was ultimately left on as the score remained 2-0 after two innings.
• The Bullets took the lead in the third inning, notching a one-two-three top of the inning and scoring three runs on four hits and one error.
Brian Andersen (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) led off with a single to left, and
David Preziuso followed up with a single of his own. Both runners advanced on a throwing error to put two in scoring position for the Bullets, and
Kyle Miller (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) hit a bases-clearing double to plate the tying runs. After a strikeout,
Matthew Peipher sent an RBI single to center field to take the lead, 3-2.
• The Green Terror tied the game again with a triple by Kelly and double by Connor Uhrig in the top of the fourth, and caught a Bullets' runner stealing to keep Gettysburg scoreless in the bottom of the inning.
• Gettysburg regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth, stringing together singles by Preziuso, Miller, and Peipher, as well as a fielder's choice, to score Preziuso for the 4-3 lead.
• Both teams sent 11 to the plate and scored five runs in a crazy sixth inning. In the top of the inning, McDaniel took the lead once again with three hits and several free passes. The Green Terror started off with a Kelly double, before a sacrifice bunt and two hit by pitches around a strikeout loaded the bases. The Green Terror scored their first of the inning on a wild pitch, and drew another walk to load the bases again. A three RBI double by Ben Davis cleared them to make it 7-4 in favor of McDaniel, and a wild pitch and single plated the final run of the inning. Two catcher's interferences loaded the bases and put the Bullets in trouble again, but
Patrick Clementi (King of Prussia, Pa./Devon Prep) struck out the next Green Terror batter to end the away half of the inning. In the bottom of the inning, Levant drew a walk and
Matt Nichols (White Plains, N.Y./Byram Hills) singled to put Levant in scoring position. A wild pitch brought Levant to third, and Preziuso singled to bring him home for the first run of the home half of the sixth. Preziuso stole a base, and Miller reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners. An RBI single from
Jack Pistner (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) drove home Preziuso, and Peipher followed up with a two RBI double to tie the game, 8-8. Two hit by pitches and a walk scored the final Gettysburg run of the inning as the Bullets took a slim 9-8 lead.
• Gettysburg made short work of McDaniel in the top of the seventh, allowing zero hits and only facing four batters. In the bottom of the inning, two straight singles by
JR McCloskey (Huntington Station, N.Y./Chaminade) and Preziuso as well as a sacrifice bunt by Miller put two runners in scoring position. The Green Terror then intentionally walked Pistner, a decision they would come to regret. After a strikeout,
Jack Burke dropped a two-out triple right in front of the fence to clear the bases and score three more for the Bullets, getting them to a 12-8 lead, their largest of the game.
• The Green Terror tallied two singles in the beginning of the eighth, and a bases-clearing double by Kelly brought McDaniel within two, 12-10. In the bottom of the inning, the Green Terror notched their second one-two-three inning of the day to hold Gettysburg scoreless.
• In the top of the ninth, pitcher
Connor Sikora struck out the first batter he faced to get the first out. A walk and a single followed and put the tying runs on base, but a fly out and strikeout ended the game in Gettysburg's favor, 12-10.
