THE REST OF THE STORY
• Two-point runs by both the Bullets and the Generals yielded a 6-5 Washington and Lee lead early in the first set, before the Generals tallied four straight points to take a 10-5 lead. Gettysburg answered with a seven-point run of their own to take a 12-10 lead, and the score became as close as two points again two more times before two
Alycen Radolovic (Willoughby, Ohio/Beaumont School) kills and two Washington and Lee points made it 18-16. From there, Gettysburg lit up the scoreboard, scoring the final seven points to win the first set 25-16.
Halle Feth (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County) had two aces and Radolovic added another kill in the stretch.
• It was Washington and Lee who came out strong in set two, with the teams trading points before the Generals put together a 5-0 run to give themselves a 6-1 lead. A 5-4 Bullets run brought them within four points at 10-6, before notching four straight to tie the set for the first time since the opening two points, 10-all. Three more ties resulted, making it a 14-all game, before three straight Generals' kills and two Bullets' errors put Washington and Lee back to a four-point lead, 18-14. Kills by Radolovic,
Catherine Holtz (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham), and
Kylie Ulrich, as well as several errors made it a tied set again at 20-all, before
Brooke Lauletta and
Gianna Galli (Demarest, N.J./Northern Valley Demarest) blocked the ball to give the Bullets their first lead of the set. Two more ties resulted, but ultimately two kills rom Sydney Heifer decided the second set in favor of the Generals, 25-23.
• Gettysburg again worked from behind in the third set, chasing a Washington and Lee five-point run that gave them a 7-4 set lead. The teams went almost point-for-point to make it 13-12 before a big 6-0 run put the Generals back in control with a seven-point lead. Gettysburg strung together kills by Holtz and Lauletta along with another block by Lauletta and Galli to close within five before going on a 5-2 run to make it a two-point set. A Riley Debiec kill put the Generals at set point, but the Bullets notched one more point before a Generals kill ended set two, 25-22, giving Washington and Lee the 2-1 match lead.
• In the fourth and final set, Gettysburg scored the first two points off an Ulrich kill and Ulrich and
Mary Huegel (Marlboro, N.J./Colts Neck) block. Another block by Huegel and Radolovic gave the Bullets a 3-1 lead, but Washington and Lee put together yet another 4-0 run to take a 5-3 lead. The teams went almost point-for-point to notch a 12-all tie, but three straight kills by Ulrich, Galli and Feth gave Gettysburg their first lead of the set since the beginning, 14-12. Washington and Lee quickly took it back through two kills of their own, and the teams traded the advantage until the set's final tie at 19-all. An ace and three Heifner kills made it 24-21 and put the Generals at match point. Gettysburg managed two more points on Lauletta kill and attack error, but a final Generals kill ended the set, 25-23, and the match, 3-1.
