THE SKINNY STORY
Gettysburg played three competitive sets with Eastern Mennonite, but pulled away at the end of each to earn a 3-0 match victory in their first game of the final day of the Battlefield Classic.
THE LEADERS
•
Halle Feth (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County) racked up a career-high 21 assists to go with two aces.
•
Kylie Ulrich (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) led the team in kills with 13.
•
Brooke Lauletta (Coatesville, Pa./Downingtown East) notched eight kills, one block, and 11 digs.
FOR THE FOES
• Lizzy Kirkton led the Royals' attack with 11 kills.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• Eastern Mennonite strode out to a 4-1 lead early in the first set, powered by a kill, block, and ace. Gettysburg began to chip away at the Royals' lead, getting within two points at 9-7 and tying the game off an Eastern Mennonite attack error and
Brooke Lauletta kill. The teams traded kills to make it an 11-all game, but Gettysburg went on a 6-2 run to put distance between them, 17-13. A 3-2 run gave Gettysburg their largest lead of the game to that point, 20-15, before three straight Royals points brought them within two again. However, that was as close as Eastern Mennonite would get, as Gettysburg earned the final five points, including kills by
Mary Huegel (Marlboro, N.J./Colts Neck),
Sophie Nasir (Covina, Calif./St. Lucy's Priory), and
Izzy Lugar (Wilmington, Del./Charter School of Wilmington), to end the set, 25-18.
• The second set saw an early 4-all tie before Gettysburg shot off on a 11-3 run to make the score 15-7.
Kylie Ulrich had three kills within the stretch. EMU responded with a 6-2 run to bring the score back within four points at 17-13, but two
Catherine Holtz (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) kills propelled Gettysburg back out to a seven-point lead at 23-16. The Royals grabbed three more points on the set with three kills before two
Brooke Lauletta kills earned Gettysburg the set two win, 25-19.
• Gettysburg roared out to an 18-7 lead in the third and final set on the backs of kills by four different Bullets and several Royals errors. Eastern Mennonite put together a few back-to-back runs to make it a 22-14 set, but ultimately an attack error and kills by Holtz and
Gianna Galli (Demarest, N.J./Northern Valley Demarest) ended the set 25-15 and earned Gettysburg the 3-0 sweep.
THE INSIDE STORY
• Gettysburg had the advantage in digs 56-46 and kills 40-32.
•
Gianna Galli put up three blocks.
