THE REST OF THE STORY
• Set one yielded 11 ties as both teams worked to find their footing. Gettysburg got out to an 8-4 lead early on before Brockport pounded two straight and used two Bullets errors to even the score. From there, Gettysburg went 8-3 with the Golden Eagles to take a three-point lead, propelled by kills from
Kylie Ulrich, but Brockport quickly responded with a five-point run to make it 16-14 in their favor. The teams continued to rally back and forth, notching a tie at 18-all before Brockport got out to 22-19 on two Jordan Thompson kills. Gettysburg rallied to stay in the set, stringing together kills by
Izzy Lugar (Wilmington, Del./Charter School of Wilmington) and
Mary Huegel (Marlboro, N.J./Colts Neck) to tie the score at 22-all. The teams tied again at 23-all after a kill and error by Brockport's Leah Vitiello, before kills by
Sophie Nasir and
Alycen Radolovic bookended a Golden Eagles' error to win the Bullets set one, 25-23.
• Gettysburg and Brockport remained within two points at the beginning of set two before Gettysburg took off on a six-point tear to make it a 9-5 score. From there, Gettysburg went 10-9 with the Golden Eagles to notch a 19-14 lead, before putting together four straight to lead 23-14. Three different Bullets contributed within the stretch. After a Gettysburg attack error gave Brockport their last point of the set, a Golden Eagles' attack error and Huegel kill ended set two, 25-15.
• In the third and final set, Gettysburg strode out to a 14-7 lead over Brockport without much resistance. Half of Gettysburg's points in the stretch came from Brockport mistakes. A kill by Maddy Howell interrupted Gettysburg's momentum before the Bullets went on a 5-0 run. The five-point streak contained back-to-back Ulrich kills and two straight Gettysburg blocks, with Huegel, Radolovic, and Ulrich contributing to those. Brockport didn't give up, getting two within 10 points at a 24-14 score for Gettysburg, and managed to bring the deficit back to single digits on a Gettysburg attack error. Ultimately, Gettysburg got the third set win on a Brockport service error to take set three 25-15 and sweep the Golden Eagles.
