THE REST OF THE STORY
• Three straight Muhlenberg errors staked Gettysburg to a 3-0 lead which they increased to 8-2 on kills by four different Bullets. Muhlenberg strung four points together to close within two, and the teams remained within two or three points until two Mules errors and a
Kylie Ulrich kill staked the Bullets to a 16-11 lead. A kill and ace by
Brooke Lauletta (Coatesville, Pa./Downingtown East) helped Gettysburg to a 22-17 advantage, but Muhlenberg grabbed three straight points on Gettysburg errors on a kill to close within one point again. From there, the teams notched ties at 23, 24, and 25-all before an Ulrich kill and Mules error ended set one in Gettysburg's favor.
• Set two saw three early ties, the last at 5-all, and the teams remained within two or three points until Muhlenberg made it 18-14 on several kills and a string of Gettysburg errors. Gettysburg brought it back within three points on kills by Gonzalez and Ulrich to trail 20-17, but four straight Gettysburg errors and a kill gave Muhlenberg the 25-17 set two win to tie the match 1-1.
• A Gettysburg 9-3 lead early in the third set swelled to 15-9 on the backs of kills by five different Bullets. The visitors continued to pull away, going 4-2 on the hosts to get up 19-11 and force a Muhlenberg timeout. Out of the break, the Mules used an ace and two kills, a well as a few Gettysburg errors, to close within 22-17, but Gettysburg ended set three on a solo block by
Olivia Biggs (Winchester, Va./James Wood) and a set point block by Biggs and
Alycen Radolovic (Willoughby, Ohio/The Beaumont School).
• The final set again saw several ties, the latest at 8-all. From there, the Bullets went 7-2 with the Mules to notch a 15-10 lead, capped by an Ulrich kill. Muhlenberg came within two points four more times in the set, the last at 20-18, before Gettysburg rattled off four straight to get to match point. Muhlenberg grabbed two more points on the match off an error and a block before committing a service error to notch a 25-20 Gettysburg set four win.
