GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Shelby Sherman, who has served as an Assistant Athletic Trainer at Gettysburg since last October, has been promoted to Director of Sports Medicine, announced by Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Campus Recreation Mike Mattia.
Sherman has been on the Bullets staff for just over a year and becomes the first woman to lead the sports medicine department in the storied history of Gettysburg Athletic Training. She takes on the expanded role as the fifth Director after the retirement of Mike Cantele in November.
"I am very excited to have Shelby ascend to the role of Director of Sports Medicine," Mattia said. "It is even more meaningful since she will be the first woman to take the reins of the athletic training area in the storied history of that program. Shelby emerged from a very competitive search process, and impressed us with her vision of where she wants to take the sports medicine area, and how she wants to build on our already established relationships with our campus partners and WellSpan while adding some new elements as well. We have a very strong core in the athletic training room and I am looking forward to expanding upon it under Shelby's leadership."
Prior to her arrival at Gettysburg, Sherman most recently served as a certified athletic trainer for WellSpan Health from June 2021 until October 2022.
She served many roles in that position, including as an athletic trainer for Hanover Area YMCA, providing care for athletes participating in the YMCA programs and club sports. She also served as a WellFit clinician, sports medicine ambassador, and provided athletic training coverage for community events.
"I am very excited to serve as the next Director of Sports Medicine, and honored to be the first female in this role," Sherman said. "I have loved being part of this staff for the past year, and working alongside an amazing core group of athletic trainers. I am excited to lead the sports medicine department and to continue working alongside Gettysburg coaches, administrators, and our on-and off-campus partners. I am thankful for this opportunity, as well as the support I've already received from the athletics department. I want to thank Mike Mattia and the search committee for allowing me this opportunity, Amanda Singer and Sam Fiore for all of their support throughout the hiring process, Mike Cantele for his mentorship, as well as my family and friends for all of their support. Let's go Bullets!"
Even prior to her full-time role, she had experience at Gettysburg, providing supplemental athletic training coverage for practices and prospect camps during her time at WellSpan.
Prior to her role with WellSpan, she spent three years as a clinical outreach certified athletic trainer for Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters in Norfolk, Virginia, after serving as a sports medicine intern during her final year as an undergraduate at Bridgewater.
She earned her bachelor of science in athletic training with a concentration in social sciences for health professionals from Bridgewater in 2018. During her time there, she was a member of the athletic training student club. Her clinical experience included time with the James Madison football team.
She earned her master of science in exercise science and health promotion from California (Pa.) in December 2020.
In addition to being a certified athletic trainer since 2018, she also became a corrective exercise specialist in September 2022.
