THE REST OF THE STORY
• Haverford jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first set. Trailing 9-6,
Clare Farrell knocked down her second kill of the day to start a 7-0 run that gave the visitors a 13-9 lead. The Fords closed back to within two on three occasions but kills by
Erin Gonzalez (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) and
Kendall Erpenbeck (San Jose, Calif./Prospect) wrapped up a 25-19 win in the opening set.
• A Gonzalez ace helped the Bullets jump out to a 3-1 start in the second set. Two
Catherine Holtz (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) kills around an Erpenbeck ace extended the lead to 13-7. Three straight Haverford points closed the margin to 22-21. After
Mary Huegel (Marlboro, N.J./Colts Neck) and Izabela Potocnjak traded kills, an attack error and
Alycen Radolovic (Willoughby, Ohio/Beaumont School) kill capped a 25-22 win.
• Kills from three different Bullets and a Huegel ace helped stake Gettysburg to a 5-2 lead in the third set but the Fords responded with four of the next five points to tie the set at 6-all. The hosts used another 4-0 run to take a 12-9 lead and extended the run to 7-1, opening up a 15-10 advantage en route to a 25-16 win, forcing a fourth set.
• Powered by a pair of Farrell knockdowns, Gettysburg raced out to a 6-2 advantage in the fourth set but Haverford reeled off five straight to respond and take an 8-7 edge. The Fords opened up a lead as large as 18-14 before kills from Farrell and Holtz and a Holtz-Huegel block closed the margin to one. The teams traded points before Gettysburg found itself in a 24-23 hole. Farrell, however, had an answer to tie the score then
Sophie Nasir (Covina, Calif./St. Lucy's Priory) dumped a kill for match point and the Bullets won it 26-24 on an attack error.
