THE REST OF THE STORY
• The first set featured nine ties and seven lead changes and neither team led by more than three points until Jackie Mitchell keyed a run of four straight points with two aces that gave Salisbury a 19-14 lead. Back-to-back
Alycen Radolovic kills, however, cut the deficit to three.
Gianna Galli (Demarest, N.J./Northern Valley Demarest) knocked down a kill to make it 20-18 but that's as close as Gettysburg could get. Mitchell put away the first set, 25-21.
• The second set was once-again back-and-forth with neither team holding a lead of larger than two until
Kierra Fox (Phoenix, Ariz./Rancho Solano Prep School) painted the first of her four aces in the match for an 11-8 lead. The Sea Gulls drew back even at 12-all but a service error and kills from
Catherine Holtz and
Erin Gonzalez put the hosts in front for good, 15-12. Fox wrapped up the 25-16 win with back-to-back aces.
• There were another nine ties and two lead changes in the third set. Tied at 12-all, Natalie Uibel got a kill to start a 5-1 run that opened up a 17-13 lead and forced a Gettysburg timeout. Trailing 18-15, Gonzalez knocked down a kill before a block and
Mary Huegel (Marlboro, N.J./Colts Neck) ace drew the set even at 18-all. The teams traded points before Holtz and Gonzelez bookended a
Kendall Erpenbeck (San Jose, Calif./Prospect) ace for a 22-19 lead en route to a 25-21 victory.
• Behind three attack errors, the Bullets jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the fourth set and never trailed. A Grace Rail ace made it a 9-7 score. After the teams traded points, Gonzalez powered down a kill to start a 6-1 run that opened up a 17-10 advantage before Gettysburg finished off the four-set win, 25-15.
