Hot shooting first half carries Mary Washington past Gettysburg

THE SKINNY STORY
Mary Washington scored nine straight points late in the first half to build a 15-point lead before holding on to down No. 13 Gettysburg 79-69 on the second day of the Al Senavitis Memorial Tournament hosted by DeSales.

THE LEADERS
Jordan Stafford (Galloway, N.J./St. Joseph Hammonton) led the Bullets with 20 points on 8 of 13 shooting. He also had six rebounds, three assists and a steal.
Carl Schaller (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) also scored 20 points, hitting five 3-pointers, to go with three rebounds, four assists and a steal.

FOR THE FOES
• Ulysses Young led all scorers for the Eagles with 21 points, hitting 6 of 8 shots from the floor that included going 4-for-6 from long range. He also had five rebounds and two assists.
• Zack Blue chipped in 20 points, hitting three triples to go with six rebounds, six assists and four steals.

THE REST OF THE STORY
• Triples from Jordan Stafford and Carl Schaller staked Gettysburg to a 6-0 lead just 1:08 into the game. Five points from Nate Williams (Morganville, N.J./St. John Vianney) opened up a 13-7 lead with 16:02 remaining in the first half. A pair of Jay Randall layups keyed an 11-3 run for Mary Washington that tied the game at 16-all with 13:20 on the clock. Kaden Bates drove and hit a layup with 11:51 showing to give the Eagles their first lead at 20-18. After a Schaller 3-pointer closed the deficit to 25-24, an 11-4 run extended the Mary Washington lead to its largest at 36-28 when Randall hit a layup to force a Gettysburg timeout with 5:17 showing. The Eagles scored nine straight points to build a 45-30 lead before Williams hit two free throws off a technical foul with 13 ticks remaining to make it a 45-32 game at the break.
• The Bullets scored the first four points of the second half, including a Schaller trey, but Zack Blue responded with back-to-back 3-pointers of his own to extend the lead to 51-36 with 16:01 to play. An 8-2 Gettysburg burst closed the margin to 53-44 on Schaller's fifth 3-pointer of the game with 13:48 remaining. After Robinson extended the lead back to double digits, a Stafford baseline jumper started a 7-0 Bullets run over a 2-minute, 26-second stretch that trimmed the margin to 55-51. A Blue pull-up and Robinson layup off a turnover started an 8-2 run that extended the Mary Washington advantage to 65-55 with 6:22 to play. The lead remained between seven and 10 points until Blue hit two free throws with 64 seconds remaining to make it a 78-66 game en route to the 10-point win.

THE INSIDE STORY
• Mary Washington shot a blistering 62.1 percent (18 of 29) from the floor in the first half in building the 13-point lead while Gettysburg shot just 32.3 percent. The Eagles shot 51.9 percent for the game while the Bullets hit at a 39.3-percent clip.
Aidan Mess (Brookeville, Md./Mt. St. Joseph) added eight points, six rebounds and three blocked shots.
