THE SKINNY STORY
After dropping a game-one pitchers' duel, Gettysburg jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the nightcap and ultimately defeated Messiah, 11-5. The Falcons took game one 2-1 after scoring twice in the bottom of the sixth.
THE LEADERS
•
Giovanna Komst (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) led the Bullets with two hits in each game. She also had two RBIs.
•
Carlie Goldstein (Verona, N.J./Verona) had three hits in game two, including a double and triple, to go with three RBIs and two runs scored.
FOR THE FOES
• Kandice Schlabach led the Falcons with four hits on the afternoon.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• In game one,
Lauren O'Leary (Manasquan, N.J./Jackson Memorial) poked a one-out double into right before taking third on a wild pitch and scoring on a
Giovanna Komst double to the gap.
• That 1-0 lead held until the bottom of the sixth. Rebekah Wiley drew a leadoff, pinch-hit walk before back-to-back strikeouts. Brielle Rosario poked a single through the right side that extended the inning for Elianna Litwin, who doubled to left-center to score both runners for the 2-1 lead and win.
• In game two,
Morgan DeFreitas (Coatesville, Pa./Downingtown West) led off the second inning with a walk before
Carlie Goldstein doubled to the left-center gap.
Gabby Wood (Dalton, Pa./Tunkhannock Area) followed with a double of her own into the corner to score both runners for a 2-0 lead.
•
Audrey Bergan (Encinitas, Calif./La Jolla Country Day School) started the third with a single up the middle before a one-out Komst single put two runners on. After a groundout moved the runners to second and third, Goldstein poked a triple to right-center to make it a 4-0 game. A throwing error allowed her to score for a 5-0 lead.
•
Anika Pelekis (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) drew a walk to open the fourth. After a throwing error put two runners on base, Bergan walked to load the bases. A two-out Komst walk forced in Pelekis before DeFreitas cranked a 2-2 pitch to straightaway center field for her first career home run – a grand slam – stretching the lead to 10-0.
• Kandice Schlabach walked and Allie Book doubled to start the bottom of the inning and break up the shutout. A one-out Wiley single made it 10-2 before a two-out, two-run Paige Eakes home run to right-center closed the deficit to 10-4.
• Schlabach doubled with one out in the fifth before scoring on a two-out Wiley single to right to make it 10-5.
• Gettysburg got the run back in the sixth. O'Leary led off with a double before a Komst infield single put runners at the corners. Goldstein poked a ball through the left side to score O'Leary with one out for an 11-5 lead.
