Gettysburg escapes Dickinson with split

THE SKINNY STORY
Dickinson rallied from a 5-0 deficit for a 6-5 game-one win before Gettysburg jumped out to an 8-0 lead in game two en route to a 12-5 victory and split.

THE LEADERS
Lauren O'Leary (Manasquan, N.J./Jackson Memorial) led the Bullets with two hits and an RBI in each game.
Allegra DeCandia (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) also had four hits and three RBIs in the twinbill.

FOR THE FOES
• Abby Kohan led the Red Devils with three hits on the afternoon, included a 2-for-4 opener.

THE REST OF THE STORY
• In game one, Audrey Bergan (Encinitas, Calif./La Jolla Country Day School) opened the game with a walk before a Julia Smith (Marydel, Md./Queen Anne's County) single. A one-out Allegra DeCandia single plated Bergan from second for a 1-0 lead.
Bailey Quinn (Hanford, Calif./Robinson Secondary School [Va.]) reached on catcher's interference with two outs in the second before a Bergan single and Smith groundball scored her for a 2-0 lead.
• DeCandia led off the third with a double before a Lauren O'Leary traded places with her with one out and then scored on a Clare Sottile (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Spackenkill) single for a 4-0 lead.
• Smith reached on a one-out walk in the fourth before singles from Carlie Goldstein (Verona, N.J./Verona) and Giovanna Komst (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) opened up a 5-0 advantage.
• Three straight two-out hits in the home fourth cut the deficit to 5-2. Jessie Sandusky came through the two-run single to break up the shutout.
• In the fifth, a hit batter started the inning before a one-out Abby Kohan single up the middle and wild pitch put two runners into scoring position. A walk loaded the bases for Erin McMahon, who poked a two-run single up the middle to make it 5-4. Another hit batter reloaded the bases for Laila Gwathmey, who poked a single to the gap for a 6-5 lead.
• In game two, Bergan once again walked to start the game before Smith singled. Goldstein followed with a double for a 2-0 lead. A DeCandia RBI single and Morgan DeFreitas (Coatesville, Pa./Downingtown West) RBI groundout staked Gettysburg to a 4-0 lead early.
• Singles from Emily Bakker (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne), Bergan, Smith and DeCandia before a two-out O'Leary triple plated another four runs in the second for an 8-0 lead.
• The bottom of the second started with back-to-back singles from Kohan and Kaylie Renner before a walk loaded the bases. A one-out Gwathmey double closed the deficit to 8-2 before a Sandusky RBI groundout made it 8-3.
• The Red Devils tacked on two more in the fourth on an Eden Blanker two-run single up the middle, trimming the margin to 8-5.
• Two errors in the fifth helped stretch the lead to 10-5 before singles from O'Leary, Sottile and Bakker helped score two more in the seventh for the final margin.

THE INSIDE STORY
Allegra DeCandia and Lauren O'Leary had two hits each in game for the Bullets, who were kept off the bases in the final three innings after scoring five over the first four frames.
Julia Smith, Carlie Goldstein and Emily Bakker joined DeCandia and O'Leary with two hits each in game two. Goldstein added three RBIs.
Nikki Caesar (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) threw the first four innings of game two with four strikeouts for the win. Audrey Wright (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) tossed the final three innings without allowing a hit or run for her first save.

Gettysburg returns to action at McDaniel on Thursday. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 3 p.m.
