THE LEADERS
•
Julia Smith (Marydel, Md./Queen Anne's County) led the Bullets with four hits on the day.
•
Paige Forry (Reading, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) started both games in the circle, throwing a total of 12 1/3 innings with eight strikeouts. She went the distance in game two, allowing just three hits for the win.
FOR THE FOES
• Lilly Cook led the Shorewomen with three hits on the day.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• In game one,
Julia Smith walked with one out in the top of the first before
Carlie Goldstein (Verona, N.J./Verona) was hit by a pitch. A two-out walk to
Giovanna Komst (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) loaded the bases before
Lauren O'Leary (Manasquan, N.J./Jackson Memorial) made it back-to-back walks to force in the first run.
Clare Sottile (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Spackenkill) made it three straight bases on balls for a 2-0 lead.
• From there, however, Lexi Barnhart settled in and allowed just seven baserunners the rest of the way, striking out seven against her six walks and two hit batters.
• The Washington offense came to life in the fourth. Jenna Harper led off the fourth with a double before Barnhart helped her own cause with an infield single to put runners at the corners. An RBI groundout made it 2-1 before a two-out error and back-to-back singles gave the hosts a 3-2 lead.
• With one out in the sixth, Shannon Rosche and Lilly Wenzel singled before Hannah Solge walked to load the bases. An error, walk and Lilly Cook single accounted for the three additional runs in the sixth, setting the final margin.
• In game two,
Lily Mader (Las Vegas, Nev./Valley) led off the fifth with an infield single before an error on a bunt attempt put two runners on. After a fielder's choice on a second straight bunt erased the runner at third, Smith singled to load the bases. A two-out
Allegra DeCandia (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) single to the right side scored two for a 2-0 lead.
• A Mader double and
Morgan DeFreitas (Coatesville, Pa./Downingtown West) pinch-hit single stretched the lead to 3-0 in the sixth.
• A leadoff walk, wild pitch and two-out Cook single cut the margin to 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth.
• DeCandia was hit by a pitch to start the seventh before an error and O'Leary three-run home run set the final margin.
