THE REST OF THE STORY
• In game one, both teams had baserunners but could not get them home until a one-out
Allegra DeCandia double in the fourth. After giving way to pinch-runner
Gianna Peralta (Gillette, N.J./Union Catholic), pinch-hitter
Maddie Murphy (Summit, N.J./Summit) drew a two-out walk.
Morgan DeFreitas (Coatesville, Pa./Downingtown West) poked a pinch-hit single through the right side and Peralta avoided the tag at the plate for a 1-0 lead.
•
Carlie Goldstein (Verona, N.J./Verona) singled past the third baseman to start the bottom of the sixth. DeCandia followed with a single to right before a
Lauren O'Leary (Manasquan, N.J./Jackson Memorial) got a ball through the left side to load the bases.
Lily Mader (Las Vegas, Nev./Valley) knocked a ball up the middle that scored two runs for a 3-0 advantage. After a fielder's choice and
Marissa Markel (Carson, Calif./San Pedro) single reloaded the bases,
Audrey Bergan (Encinitas, Calif./La Jolla Country Day School) and
Giovanna Komst (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) each drew bases-loaded walks around a groundout to stretch the lead to 5-0.
• After the Diplomats put two on with one out in the seventh,
Paige Forry got a double play to end it.
• In game two, Claire Sullivan doubled to start the third inning but a strong relay throw cut her down trying to stretch it to a triple. After a Hillary Murse single, Jaden Spigner poked the first pitch she saw over the left-field fence for a 2-0 lead.
• Komst, DeCandia and Goldstein all doubled to start the sixth and tie the game at 2-all.
• Bergan led off the seventh, dropping a single into shallow left before
Julia Smith (Marydel, Md./Queen Anne's County) beat out the sacrifice attempt for a hit. Komst worked a 3-0 count before a pitching change and then completed the four-pitch walk one pitch into the relief pitcher's outing. DeCandia then drove a 1-0 pitch over the heads of the drawn-in outfield for the game-winning single to score Bergan.
