THE SKINNY STORY
Gettysburg exploded for eight runs in the sixth inning of game to record a 9-1 run-rule win before scoring early in game two to complete the sweep of Ursinus 4-2 and secure a top-three seed in the Centennial Conference tournament and spot in the double-elimination portion of the field.
THE LEADERS
•
Julia Smith (Marydel, Md./Queen Anne's County) led the Bullets with a 3-for-4 opening game that included a three-run double that ended the game in the bottom of the sixth.
•
Audrey Bergan (Encinitas, Calif./La Jolla Country Day School) went 2-for-3 in game two.
FOR THE FOES
• Sara Sullivan led the Bears with three hits on the afternoon.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• After Ursinus stranded the bases loaded in the top of the first,
Julia Smith dropped a one-out single into left field in the bottom of the first of game one. After an
Allegra DeCandia (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) two-out walk,
Carlie Goldstein (Verona, N.J./Verona) singled to the gap, scoring Smith for a 1-0 lead.
• Rachel Hartman doubled to the fence with one out in the fourth before an hard-hit ball to the left side put runners at the corners and a Hadyson Hickman single up the middle tied the game.
• Smith started the sixth inning with a double to right before scoring on a
Giovanna Komst (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) single up the middle to break the deadlock. A third walk in the game to DeCandia put two on. Goldstein followed with a double to the fence that scored both runners for a 4-1 lead. After a fielder's choice without an out and walk loaded the bases, the Bears made a second pitching change in the inning.
Bailey Quinn (Hanford, Calif./Robinson Secondary School [Va.]) lofted a pinch-hit sacrifice fly to make it 5-1 before a fielding error and
Audrey Bergan single back up the middle reloaded the bases. Smith came through the bases-clearing double to end the game.
• In game two, Bergan walked to lead off the home first before Komst and DeCandia drew free passes with one out to load the bases for Goldstein, who doubled to left for a 2-0 lead.
• Quinn walked with one out in the second before Bergan poked a single to the left side. After a groundout put both runners in scoring position, a Komst two-out knock up the middle made it 4-0.
• Back-to-back bunt singles with one out in the third and a Sara Sullivan two-out triple to the wall in right cut the deficit in half. However, the Bears did not have another baserunner the rest of the way.
