THE SKINNY STORY
Gettysburg took advantage of four Swarthmore errors in the top of the fifth inning to plate four runs without the benefit of a hit and record a 4-1 victory in the opening game of the double-elimination portion of the Centennial Conference (CC) tournament.
THE LEADERS
•
Paige Forry (Reading, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) went the distance in the circle to lead the Bullets, striking out five and walking just one.
•
Julia Smith (Marydel, Md./Queen Anne's County) added two of the four hits for the offense.
FOR THE FOES
• Olivia McClammy had an RBI double to lead the Garnet.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• Jordan Jackson poked a single through the left side to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning before a sacrifice and Olivia McClammy double to the fence in left staked Swarthmore to a 1-0 lead.
• Back-to-back errors put
Anika Pelekis (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) and
Audrey Bergan (Encinitas, Calif./La Jolla Country Day School) at third and second, respectively, with no outs in the top of the fifth. After a wild pitch and
Julia Smith walk put runners at the corners, Smith stole second to put two runners back in scoring position. A groundout and third error plated Bergan for a 2-1 lead. Pinch-runner
Zoe Brennan (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) stole second base to put runners at second and third before a
Carlie Goldstein (Verona, N.J./Verona) RBI groundout made it 3-1. Another fielding error pushed across the fourth unearned run of the inning.
• After a two-out error in the bottom of the fifth, Bergan caught a fly ball on the run and picked off the runner at first to end the threat.
Paige Forry then worked around baserunners in both the sixth and seventh for the win.
