THE SKINNY STORY
Gettysburg, ranked sixth in the latest IWLCA Div. III coaches' poll, scored four straight goals in the fourth quarter to take an 11-9 lead but No. 4 Salisbury tallied twice in the final 2:32 of regulation to force overtime. The Bullets nabbed the opening possession of the extra session and found the game winner for a 12-11 win.
THE LEADERS
•
Grace Battle (Lynchburg, Va./Virginia Episcopal School) led the Bullets, establishing a career high with five goals that included scoring the final three for the home team. She also had two draw controls.
FOR THE FOES
• Audrey Harrington led the Sea Gulls with four goals and an assist.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• Three different goal scorers staked Gettysburg to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter.
Julie Breedveld (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) opened the scoring off a feed from
Emily Crane (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) just 2:12 into the game.
Julia Daly (McLean, Va./Langley) then found a cutting
Sophie Smith (Great Falls, Va./Langley) with 6:27 showing and Crane finished the opening run with 1:14 on the clock. Amelia Skinner found the back of the net in transition with just 22 ticks remaining to make it 3-1 after one.
• Audrey Harrington netted her first 2:12 into the second quarter before
Lauren O'Connell (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) finished a solo run and Daly knocked home a free-position attempt to reopen a three-goal advantage midway through the period. Julianna Ott and
Grace Battle traded tallies to make it a 6-3 game at the intermission.
• Harrington scored in the opening minute of the third quarter before Miranda Mears converted from eight meters on the advantage to once again draw the guests within one with 13:12 on the clock. O'Connell found the back of the net for the second time before Harrington and Mears went back-to-back and tie the game at 7-all at the end of the period.
• Liz Haney and Harrington each found the back of the net in the opening three minutes of the fourth quarter for the Sea Gulls' first lead of the game. The Bullets wasted little time with a player advantage and O'Connell found Battle to make it a 9-8 game with 10:41 remaining.
Michaela Kelly (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) finished from in close to tie the game and Battle put home a pair of solo markers just over five minutes apart for an 11-9 lead with 3:45 to play. Alexandra Parker found Carly Hoffman with 2:32 remaining to make it a one-goal game then she hit Grace Doyle with 66 ticks to tie the game once again. Gettysburg had one final look but couldn't get a good look at the cage.
• Crane won her ninth draw control of the game to open overtime. The Bullets worked the possession clock inside five seconds before Breedveld found a cutting Battle from the left side and the freshman finished the game-winner.
