Gettysburg splits pair at Swarthmore

THE SKINNY STORY
Gettysburg, ranked 13th in the latest NFCA Div. III coaches' poll, scored three runs in the sixth inning of game two to secure a 7-4 victory and forge a split at Swarthmore in a battle for the top of the conference. The Garnet captured game one, 6-1.

THE LEADERS
• Elliana Hopple (Collegeville, Pa./The Episcopal Academy) led the Bullets with two hits and three RBIs in the nightcap.
• Paige Forry (Reading, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) threw 11 innings on the day, striking out 12 batters.

FOR THE FOES
• Emily Betrand led the Garnet with two hits in each game, adding five total RBIs.

THE REST OF THE STORY
• In game one, a two-out walk to Olivia McClammy, hit batter and Emily Bertrand single led to a 1-0 Swarthmore lead in the bottom of the first.
• Gettysburg got back even in the third when Audrey Bergan (Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Calif./La Jolla Country Day School) led off with a single, moved to third on a throwing error and scored on a two-out Morgan DeFreitas (Coatesville, Pa./Downingtown West) sacrifice fly.
• Jordan Jackson singled with one out in the third before a walk, sacrifice and two-run single from Bertrand made it 3-1. Kate Borza followed with an RBI single down the line and Lia Fong doubled for a 5-1 lead.
• An Iris Barone double and one-out McClammy single set the final score in the sixth.
• In the nightcap, Jamie Shaw (Mount Airy, Md./Glenelg) reached on an infield single with one out in the top of the first before a throwing error and back-to-back two-out singles from Renee Laczkowski (Erie, Colo./Erie) and Anika Pelekis (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) staked the Bullets to a 2-0 lead.
• An error and two-out Bertrand single made it 2-1 in the bottom of the frame.
• Lily Mader (Las Vegas, Nev./Valley) led off the second with a single before moving to second on a wild pitch, third on a Bergan single and scoring on a Shaw sacrifice fly for a 3-1 edge.
• A Jackson infield one-out single, McClammy double and Bertrand single made it 3-2 in the third. In the fourth, it was a one-out Grace Taylor single and two-out Barone triple that tied the game at 3-all.
• A Bergan single, sacrifice and Hopple double put the visitors back in front in the fifth before Gettysburg plated three in the sixth. Lauren O'Leary (Manasquan, N.J./Jackson Memorial) led off with a single before moving up a base on a sacrifice. Abigail Gold (Apex, N.C./Apex) followed with a single to put runners at the corners. After she stole second, Bergan singled to score O'Leary and make it runners at the corners again. Bergan stole second and scored on a two-out Hopple single down the line for a 7-3 lead.
• McClammy doubled with one out in the seventh and scored on a Fong two-out single for the final margin.

THE INSIDE STORY
• Swarthmore outhit Gettysburg 9-3 in the opener led by an 11-strikeout performance from Lilly Goldberg.
• Audrey Bergan had three hits in game two while Anika Pelekis and Lily Mader joined Elliana Hopple with two each.

NEXT UP
Gettysburg returns to action at Franklin & Marshall on Tuesday. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 3 p.m.
