THE SKINNY STORY
Gettysburg, ranked 14th in the latest NFCA Div. III coaches' poll, rallied late to complete a sweep of McDaniel and secure a top-two seed in the Centennial Conference tournament and reach a new record for wins in a season. The Bullets took game one 9-1 in five innings before winning game two, 6-2.
THE LEADERS
•
Paige Forry (Reading, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) led the Bullets with wins in the circle in both games. She totaled 13 strikeouts in 11 1/3 innings while walking just three. She allowed just three hits in the complete-game effort in game one before not allowing a hit in 3 1/3 innings of relief in game two.
FOR THE FOES
• Ashley Shawyer led the Green Terror with three hits that included a 2-for-2 opener.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• In the first game, McDaniel jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Ally McBride poked a single up the middle with one out before scoring on an Ashley Shawyer two-out double to the gap.
•
Renee Laczkowski (Erie, Colo./Erie) led off the home second with a double to right before scoring on an
Anika Pelekis (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) double to the track in left field to tie the game.
•
Audrey Bergan (Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Calif./La Jolla Country Day School) started a six-run third inning with a single up the middle. Back-to-back fielding errors loaded the bases and
Morgan DeFreitas (Coatesville, Pa./Downingtown West) poked a single through the left side that scored two for a 3-1 lead. After a pitching change, Pelekis dropped a one-out single into center to plate
Elliana Hopple (Collegeville, Pa./The Episcopal Academy) for a 4-1 lead. A two-run
Lauren O'Leary (Manasquan, N.J./Jackson Memorial) double to the gap made it 6-1 before she scored on an
Abigail Gold (Apex, N.C./Apex) two-out triple for a 7-1 advantage.
•
Jamie Shaw (Mount Airy, Md./Glenelg) beat out a soft comebacker to lead off the fourth before scoring from first on a Hopple double to the gap. A two-out Pelekis single scored Hopple from third to give Gettysburg an eight-run lead.
•
Paige Forry had her third 1-2-3 inning of the game in the top of the fifth, including her seventh and eighth strikeouts of the game, to close out the run-rule win.
• In the nightcap, Bergan walked to lead off the home first before moving to second on a wild pitch and scoring on a Shaw double off the fence in center for a 1-0 lead.
• Bella Sylvester led off the top of the third by lining a single to left. With two outs, Shawyer doubled to left and tied the game. On a Kaylah Morosko single, a muffed throw at the plate allowed Shawyer to score for a 2-1 McDaniel lead.
• After the Bullets loaded the bases with one out in the third but couldn't score, DeFreitas and Laczkowski both walked with one out in the fifth. Pelekis followed with a groundout to the right side that scored pinch-runner
Kate Buckley (Springfield, N.J./Jonathan Dayton) from second and moved pinch-runner
Alyna Balewitz (Kendall Park, N.J./Lawrenceville School) to third with two outs. O'Leary dropped a single just inside the right-field line to score Balewitz for a 3-2 lead.
• With one out in the sixth, Bergan slapped a single through the left side to extend her hitting streak to 25 straight games. Shaw followed with a single to shallow left. After a Hopple walk loaded the bases, DeFreitas dropped a single into center to plate Bergan for a 4-2 lead. Laczkowski followed with a two-run single through the left side to set the final margin.
