THE SKINNY STORY
Gettysburg, ranked 14th in the latest NFCA Div. III coaches' poll, scored late in both games to break ties and sweep Muhlenberg by scores of 1-0 in game one and 5-3 in game two.
THE LEADERS
•
Jamie Shaw (Mount Airy, Md./Glenelg) led the Bullets with three hits in the twinbill.
FOR THE FOES
• Gillian Zack led the Mules with two hits in game two, including a double and triple. She had two RBIs in the game as well.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• In game one, neither team could scratch a run across until the sixth inning.
Audrey Bergan (Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Calif./La Jolla Country Day School) reached on a one-out throwing error before a
Jamie Shaw infield single put runners at first and second. After a flyout,
Morgan DeFreitas (Coatesville, Pa./Downingtown West) singled to center field to score Bergan just ahead of an out on the bases for a 1-0 lead and the game's lone run.
• Bergan led off game two with an infield single before stealing second and taking third on a Shaw infield single.
Elliana Hopple (Collegeville, Pa./The Episcopal Academy) followed with a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.
• Kaitlyn Burrman poked a one-out single to center in the bottom of the frame before scoring on a Gillian Zack double to tie the game.
• In the fifth inning,
Abigail Gold (Apex, N.C./Apex) reached on a one-out single for the Bullets in the top of the frame. A Bergan bunt single and wild pitch put two runners in scoring position before Shaw walked to load the bases. Hopple was hit by a pitch to force in Gold with the go-ahead run before a two-run DeFreitas single made it 4-1. After the second pitching change of the inning,
Anika Pelekis (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) doubled to score pinch-runner
Kate Buckley (Springfield, N.J./Jonathan Dayton) for a 5-1 advantage.
• A pair of errors around a Zack triple closed the deficit to 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth.
THE INSIDE STORY
• There were just eight combined hits in the first game.
Paige Forry (Reading, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) went the distance in the circle for Gettysburg with four strikeouts and no walks, scattering five hits.
•
Jamie Shaw,
Audrey Bergan,
Morgan DeFreitas and
Abigail Gold all had two hits each in game two.
•
Audrey Wright (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) pitched the first five innings to improve to 10-1 while Forry picked up her fourth save throwing the final two innings.
• With the sweep, the Bullets assure no worse than a tie atop the conference standings. If Swarthmore sweeps Dickinson on Sunday, the top seed will be determined by run differential. Gettysburg currently holds the advantage in tie tiebreaker.
