Beddick announces departure; Hefele tabbed interim baseball coach

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – After spending the last three seasons as the head baseball coach for his alma mater, Cory Beddick '10 has announced that he will depart Gettysburg at the end of the year to become Director of Athletics and Recreation at Alvernia University.

"It has been a privilege to lead the Gettysburg College baseball team over the past three years," Beddick said. "While we regret not being here longer, this is an opportunity that is simply too good to pass up for my family and me. I am incredibly proud of everything we've accomplished together. Although we didn't reach our ultimate goal of winning championships, the most meaningful part of this journey has been building relationships with our players – young men I admire, respect, and love.

"To our players: thank you for your dedication to Gettysburg Baseball and to each other. You are what makes this decision so difficult. You should be immensely proud of what you've accomplished, both individually and as a team. You've raised the bar for future Gettysburg teams and moved the program forward by focusing on going 1-0 every day. I can't wait to watch from afar as you continue to succeed – here at Gettysburg and beyond. I'm always here if you need anything.

"Thank you to all of our assistant coaches – Coaches Hef, Kramer, Warrenfeltz, Festa, Reever, and Shelby Sherman – for your friendship, support, and tireless work over the past three years. And finally, thank you to Coach John Campo. Following in your footsteps after your retirement was a dream come true. I only hope I carried the position with the same grace and kindness that you did. Your mentorship and friendship have meant the world to me."

Over the last three seasons, Beddick has guided the Bullets to a 65-56 mark, including the program's first 30-win season since 2014. Gettysburg appeared in the Centennial Conference tournament this season for the first time since 2017. The 2025 squad had the best start in program history with a 15-0 record and rose as high as No. 13 in the D3baseball.com national rankings for the highest national ranking in program history. The Bullets wait to see if the season will continue into the NCAA tournament when selections are released on May 12.

His teams have set the program record for runs scored in each of his years at the helm. His squads have also reset the record for walks, RBIs and stolen bases in a single season. Many of his players have also established program marks for individual season and career records, including Jack Pistner setting the record for single-season and career home runs as well as RBIs in a single season and career. The offense has consistently been among the national leaders in walks drawn, on-base percentage and runs scored.

"I am excited for Cory as his career transition from head coach into athletics administration," Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Campus Recreation Mike Mattia said. "He is going to be a great director of athletics, and Alvernia is lucky to have him. Cory has done an incredible job in his short stint back at his alma mater retuning success in all facets to the baseball program. He is leaving the program in great shape with the new baseline he has established. We are sorry to see Cory and his family leave the Gettysburg community but wish him, Coleen, and Nolan all the best in their next stage of life."

With Beddick's departure, current assistant coach and pitching coach Jeremy Hefele will serve as interim head baseball coach. Jayson Kramer will also remain on staff, taking over Hefele's role as assistant on his staff.

"Jeremy has played a very important role in helping build the baseball program up to the level that it is now," Mattia added. "Having Jeremy at the helm will not only not only stabilize and keep continuity within the program with Cory's departure but he will be able to lead this program to the next levels of growth that were envisioned when he and Cory took over three seasons ago. I am excited for Jeremy to take the reins of the program."

The pitching staff has also improved each year under Beddick and Hefele. In 2025, the staff posted a 4.94 earned-run average as a corps. This season, the group is currently ranked in the top 90 in Division III in ERA, WHIP, strikeout-to-walk ratio and walks per nine innings.

Hefele joined Beddick as pitching coach shortly after he took over as head coach. Prior to his arrival, Hefele spent the 2022 season as the head coach at Clarks Summit University and was the interim head coach for the 2021 season at Cairn after serving as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Highlanders from 2018-20. He was also a head coach in the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League, guiding the Trenton Generals to the 2021 championship.

"There's no one better to lead the program forward than Jeremy Hefele," Beddick said of his assistant. "Coach Hef has been an integral part of every aspect of the program over the past three years and is ready to carry the momentum we've built. He brings the two most important qualities in a leader – he's a great person and an incredibly hard worker. He earns the respect of everyone he works with, and I know he'll work tirelessly to provide our players with a championship experience. As an alum, I've never been more excited about the future of our program. Go Bullets!"
