THE REST OF THE STORY
• Kills from Kierra Fox (Phoenix, Ariz./Rancho Solano Prep School) and Gianna Galli staked Gettysburg to a 2-0 lead early in the opening match against William Smith. The Herons, however, countered with the next five for a 5-2 lead. The Bullets drew back even at 8-all and neither team led by more than two until a Malya Sayre ace keyed a run of three straight points to take a 21-17 lead. Trailing 22-18, Mary Huegel (Marlboro, N.J./Colts Neck) knocked down a kill then had an ace to make it 22-20. An error cut the margin to one before the teams traded points. Facing set point, an error and Galli ace evened the set at 24-all. Emma Bradshaw and Galli then combined for a block and then Bradshaw knocked down the game-winner, 26-24.
• Two Ava Grall (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra) keyed a 6-0 run that staked Gettysburg to a 6-1 lead in the second set. The lead swelled to 9-3 before the teams traded points. Two Kali Vanderhoof aces keyed a run five straight Heron points to pull within 11-10. The run extended to 9-1 for a 14-12 William Smith lead. Four straight Gettysburg points capped by a Kendall Erpenbeck (San Jose, Calif./Prospect) ace put the hosts back in front, 16-14. Trailing 22-21, Grall knocked down a kill then Bradshaw and Galli once again combined for a block and Erpenbeck chipped in another ace for a 24-22 lead en route to a 25-23 win.
• Two Halle Feth (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County) keyed an early run of six straight points for a 9-3 advantage. Gettysburg held the lead until five straight Heron points gave the visitors a 21-18 lead. Trailing 22-19, kills from Bradshaw and Erin Gonzalez (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) made it a one-point set. Three straight errors pushed it to match score before Bradshaw capped the sweep for a 25-22 win.
• Against York, a Grall ace ignited an early 10-2 run and Gettysburg cruised to a 25-10 first-set win.
• Holding a 7-6 edge in the second set, two Feth aces keyed a run of five straight points to build a 12-6 lead. The lead grew to 22-12 on a Nala Shearer (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) ace. Feth capped a 25-12 win and 2-0 lead.
• York jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the third set but Gettysburg scored seven of the next eight points for a 8-7 edge. After the Spartans tied the set at 8-all but Clare Farrell (Livingston, N.J./Academy of St. Elizabeth) knocked down a kill to spark an 8-0 run. The Bullets had another 8-0 run in the 25-16 win.
