THE REST OF THE STORY
• Three
Erin Gonzalez kills around a
Nala Shearer (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) ace helped key a 4-0 start to the opening set and Gettysburg never trailed in the set. A Gonzalez kill made it 21-11 before she knocked down an ace.
Ellen Manke and
Clare Farrell then sandwiched a pair of blocks around a Manke knockdown for the 25-11 win.
•
Kierra Fox (Phoenix, Ariz./Rancho Solano Prep School) served the first six points of the second set to set the tone for a 25-13 win.
• The third set featured 16 ties and six lead changes. Susquehanna built an early lead as large as 9-5 but a Gonzalez kill started a run of four straight points that she capped with an ace to tie the set at 9-all. Neither team led by more than two the rest of the way. Tied at 25-all, Addison Dodge and Makenzie Cober put down consecutive kills to force the fourth set.
• The fourth set was nearly as back-and-forth with eight ties and three lead changes. Tied for the final time at 16-all,
Elle Lang (South Setauket, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) dropped down a kill. An error made it 18-16 and forced a timeout. Out of the stoppage, Farrell knocked down two more kills – part of the 13 she had in the final set. She had two more to help extend the advantage to 23-18 before Camille Ince made it 23-19. Gonzalez, though, had the final two kills of the night for the 25-19 victory.
