THE SKINNY STORY
Gettysburg scored a single run in the top of the eighth inning to defeat McDaniel 6-5 in game one before plating six in the top of the seventh in game two for a 9-8 win and sweep.
THE LEADERS
•
Abigail Gold (Apex, N.C./Apex) went 2-for-3 in game two for the Bullets, including the game-winning grand slam with two outs and the visitors trailing by three.
•
Audrey Bergan (Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Calif./La Jolla Country Day School) was 1-for-1 with three walks and three runs scored in game one before going 2-for-4 with a run, RBI and walk in game two.
FOR THE FOES
• Cameron Kelly led the Green Terror with five hits on the day, including a perfect 4-for-4 with a home run in the opener.
THE REST OF THE STORY
•
Audrey Bergan manufactured the first run of the game, leading off with an infield single before stealing second and taking third on a passed ball and scoring on an RBI groundout for a 1-0 lead.
• Ally McBride singled with one out in the bottom of the inning before a Caitlin Boden double put two in scoring position. A Cameron Kelly RBI single and fielding error gave McDaniel a 2-1 lead.
• The Bullets tied the game in the top of the second on an
Emily Bakker (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) double and
Zoe Brennan (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) single.
• A McBride one-out single and two-out homer from Kelly put the hosts back in front 4-2 before Gettysburg retied the game in the fifth.
Jamie Shaw (Mount Airy, Md./Glenelg) led off with a single before Bergan walked. After a sacrifice put both in scoring position, a passed ball and
Renee Laczkowski (Erie, Colo./Erie) sacrifice fly tied the game at 4-all.
• A Bergan two-out walk, stolen base and
Lauren Bickler (Sussex, Wis./Hamilton) single gave Gettysburg a 5-4 edge in the top of the seventh but the Green Terror tied the game once again on a McBride triple and Boden single to start the home half. A line-out double play ended the threat and sent the game to extras.
• With Laczkowski on second, a groundout and
Abby Todd (Roebling, N.J./Northern Burlington County Regional) sacrifice fly made it 6-5. The tying run moved up to third on a passed ball in the bottom of the frame but Gettysburg got a strikeout, lineout and groundout to preserve the win.
• In game two, the Bullets once again jumped out in front with two runs in the top of the first. A Bickler infield single and back-to-back doubles from Laczkowski and Pelekis made it 2-0.
• A walk and McBride single put runners at the corners before a Kelly sacrifice fly cut the deficit in half.
• The Green Terror tied it in the third on two walks and a Taylor Applefeld single up the middle.
• Home runs from Morgan Rogers and Ryan Smith gave McDaniel a 4-2 lead in the fourth before doubles from
Abigail Gold and Bergan made it 4-3 in the fifth.
• Two singles and a double play stretch the Green Terror lead back to two in the home fifth before the hosts plated three in the sixth for an 8-3 lead. Erin Thayer and Smith started the inning with back-to-back doubles before three singles and an error with one out extended the lead to five entering the seventh.
• Bergan started the seventh-inning rally with a single up the middle. A one-out walk to Laczkowski and Pelekis single loaded the bases. Todd singled to the gap to make it 8-5 before
Lily Mader (Las Vegas, Nev./Valley) walked to load the bases. After a strikeout, Gold took an 0-1 pitch deep to left-center for her first home run of the season. The Bullets then got three straight groundouts for the sweep.
