THE SKINNY STORY
Gettysburg opened the second day of the Battlefield Classic with a 3-0 win over Buffalo State before being edged in a tight five-set match against Bridgewater, 3-2.
THE LEADERS
•
Nala Shearer (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) led the Bullets with 54 digs in the two matches, including a career-high 36 in the five-set match against Bridgewater. She also had six aces in the two matches.
•
Clare Farrell (Livingston, N.J./Academy of St. Elizabeth) wrapped up a spot on the all-tournament team with 22 kills and 19 digs that included a 13-kill, 9-dig outing against the Eagles.
FOR THE FOES
• Anel Acosta led the Bengals with 11 kills.
• Reagan Stoop led the Eagles with 25 kills and 15 digs.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• A Lily Tierney kill and Anel Acosta ace staked Buffalo State to an early 2-0 lead.
Erin Gonzalez (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) knocked down a kill then served another three straight points for a 4-2 Gettysburg lead that the hosts did not relinquish in a 25-21 win. The lead grew to as large as 20-12 before four straight Bengal points closed the deficit to four.
• Buffalo State led by as many in five in the second set and lead 11-7 before
Emma Bradshaw (East Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) started a 12-3 run with a kill. Gonzalez wrapped up a 25-17 win with an ace.
• Gettysburg scored the first two points of the third set and never trailed, gradually extending the lead to a 25-16 win for the sweep.
• In the first set against Bridgewater, the Eagles opened up a 24-16 lead on back-to-back Olivia Mason kills. After a service error turned the serve over to
Nala Shearer, the junior capped a run of eight straight service points with back-to-back aces for a 24-all deadlock. An error gave Bridgewater set point but Gonzalez knocked down a kill to stave it off. An Eagle error and another Gonzalez knockdown gave Gettysburg a 27-25 win.
• Two Maya Veselinovic kills gave Bridgewater a 3-1 lead in the second set. The set featured six ties with neither team leading by more than four before Agnes Alford capped a 25-22 win with a kill.
• After a back-and-forth start to the third set, Reagan Stoop tied the set at 8-all and started a 4-0 run give the visitors an 11-8 lead en route to a 25-18 win and 2-1 lead in the match.
• The fourth set started much the same way with a back-and-forth affair before a
Gianna Galli (Demarest, N.J./Northern Valley Demarest) kill tied the set at 7-all and started a 6-0 Gettysburg run. Shearer had back-to-back aces after the Galli kill before kills from three different players – including a dump kill by freshman setter
Kaitlyn Hedrich (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln Way). A
Halle Feth (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County) ace wrapped up a 25-19 win and forced the deciding set.
• The teams once again traded points to start the fifth before kills from Mason and Stoop made it 5-3 Bridgewater. A Veselinovic ace and Virginia Collins kill forced a timeout at 7-3. Gettysburg clawed back to within 13-11 on back-to-back attack errors but a tight play at the net stayed up and eventually Stoop put down back-to-back kills to wrap up the match, 15-11.
