National Football League Hall of Famer and former U.S. Congressman Steve Largent paid a visit to the Gettysburg College campus Monday evening, speaking at a Fellowship of Christian Athletes meeting at the Juncture in the College Union Building.
Before a group of Gettysburg student-athletes and athletic staff, Largent shared both the testimony of his Christian faith as well as the life events of a career path that changed direction on multiple occasions. He also discussed his thoughts on topics ranging from the challenges of raising a family in the NFL to the hot-button issue of concussions during a question-and-answer session at the conclusion of his visit.
"Steve Largent was an amazing football player and a United States Congressman, but he is also a really good guy and that shows in his willingness to come speak to a group of people at a small school like Gettysburg," said
Wes Lincoln '14, a member of Gettysburg's FCA and men's lacrosse team. "It was an exciting opportunity for our FCA group and he did a good job mixing stories about his faith and his experiences as a professional athlete."
Largent spent all 14 of his seasons in the NFL as a wide receiver with the Seattle Seahawks and held several all-time receiving records at the time of his retirement in 1989 before being inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 1995. He served in the House of Representatives for Oklahoma from 1994-2002 before taking over his current position as President of CTIA-The Wireless Association in 2003.
