GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg's men's and women's cross country teams each finished fourth at the Centennial Conference Championships, held at an extremely muddy Gettysburg course, Saturday afternoon.
The Bullet women accumulated 103 points, placing behind No. 34 Haverford College (85), No. 18 Dickinson College (49), and second-ranked Johns Hopkins University, which claimed its second straight CC crown with 26 points.
The men's team earned a score of 112, placing behind Johns Hopkins (68), No. 8 Haverford (46), and No. 9 Dickinson, which also won its second straight conference title with a meet-record 16 points.
The thick mud and strong winds slowed times considerably, but senior
Kerrin Epstein (Moravia, N.Y./Moravia) turned in a solid performance for the women's team. She placed fifth in a field of 111 to earn her fourth consecutive All-Centennial Conference medal and her second straight first-team (top-seven) award. She was clocked at 23:17.07 for the 6,000-meter course.
Also capturing all-conference honors was senior
Sarah Fritz (Ledyard, Conn./Ledyard), who garnered her second straight second-team (given to the eighth through 14th place finishers) medal. Fritz placed 13th in 24:12.49.
Freshman
Kerry Campbell (Carlisle, Pa./Trinity) also ran a strong race for the Bullets, placing 16th in 24:26.94. Classmate
Christine Esposito (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) finished 35th in 25:22.30 while senior
Katie Haas (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) rounded out the team scoring, taking 38th in 25:26.26.
Haverford sophomore Emily Lipman grabbed the women's title, topping defending CC champion Laura Paulsen by seven seconds in 22:40.66.
The men's team was paced by senior
Adrian Macdonald (Westwood, Mass./Westwood), who placed 19th among 99 runners, traversing the 8,000-meter course in 27:53.37. Junior
Thomas Daniels (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkahnnock) and senior
Jeff Butterworth (Glen Mills, Pa./West Chester East) finished neck-and-neck, placing 25th (28:06.33) and 26th (28:06.66), respectively.
Placing 28th in 28:13.03 was junior
Clay Reynolds (Medway, Mass./Worcester Academy), while senior
Chris McCullough (Havertown, Pa./Malvern Prep) completed the team scoring, taking 29th in 28:22.75.
Senior Ryan Leak of Dickinson won his second straight individual title, edging teammate Nick Karwoski in 26:30.71. He is the first male to repeat as conference champion since Haverford's J.B. Haglund did it in 2000-01.
Gettysburg returns to action on Nov. 14, when it runs at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional, hosted by Muhlenberg at Lehigh University.
