Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg controlled most of its non-conference men's soccer match against the University of Mary Washington on Wednesday night, doubling the visitor's shot count and easily winning time of possession. However, the Eagles came through where it mattered most - on the scoreboard - and left Clark Field with a 1-0 victory.
Mary Washington (9-4) took up the attack initially and forced a pair of shots in the opening 2:42, the last stopped by freshman goalie
Mike Walmer (Hershey, Pa./Hershey). Gettysburg (4-5-2) turned the tide back on the Eagles and fired off five shots over a 10-minute span, three of which were saved by Emmett Rutkowski.
The field was relatively quiet for 20 minutes as the two teams jockeyed for position. Mary Washington was the first to strike and connect as Jimmy Ford threaded a ball to Will Gallop in front of the goal. Gallop turned the pass into a well-placed shot that nestled into the left corner for the match's only goal at 40:30.
In the second half, senior
Geoff Menge (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) put a header on goal in the 61st minute and sophomore
Kyle DeBlois (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) made a pair of nice plays on the offensive end in the 62nd and 66th minutes. All three were turned away by Rutkowski as part of his match-high eight saves.
Gettysburg's best shot at cracking the scoring column came in the 79th minute on a foul in the box. Menge took the penalty kick and blasted it low and to his right. Rutkowski timed his move perfectly, diving to his left to slap the attempt away from the goal. The Bullets made a last-ditch effort to score in the final minutes and forced a corner kick. Senior
Drew Erickson (Overland, Kan./Friends Central School (Pa.)) was in the box for a header inside the left post, but once against Rutkowski made the stop.
Gettysburg led the shot department 12-6 and totaled seven corner kicks to Mary Washington's five. Walmer finished with a trio of saves and Menge posted four shots for the Bullets.
Gettysburg will try to get back on track this Saturday, Oct. 10, with a Centennial Conference road trip to Haverford College. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
