Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Cody Antonini connected on a shot from an impossible angle at the end of the 83rd minute to propel visiting Muhlenberg College past Gettysburg College 1-0 in Centennial Conference men's soccer action at Clark Field on Saturday, Sept. 26.

Muhlenberg (5-2-0, 2-0-0 CC), coming off three-consecutive victories by four or more goals, looked like it would run away with the decision in the early going based on offensive statistics alone. The Mules turned in 17 shots in the opening period with six coming on goal. Gettysburg (4-2-2, 1-1-0 CC) held strong in the rainy conditions behind an impressive display by freshman goalie Jamie Hahn (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield). In his first start between the pipes for the Bullets, Hahn made five saves in the opening half, several coming from point-blank range. He also received a bit of help from senior Geoff Menge (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West), who knocked away a header on goal by Adison Weseloh.

Gettysburg's offense picked up late in the first stanza as freshman Ben Tabor (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) took a couple stabs at the goal, one of which nearly led to the match's first tally. A shot by Tabor was blocked by a Mule defender and went right to Ryan Shaffer (Biglerville, Pa./Biglerville) just inside the top of the box. Shaffer's ensuing shot just missed finding paydirt, instead banging off the far right post.

Both teams maintained a steady defensive presence in the second half with neither offense managing to produce much in the way of effective scoring opportunities. Weseloh nearly gave Muhlenberg the lead midway through the period, sliding through a shot on the right side and just missing the far left post.

A free kick from the right side of the midfield led to the match's only score with just over seven minutes remaining. The ball tailed into the box and after deflecting off both an attacker and a defender, appeared to be headed out of bounds. Antonini had other things in mind, however, blasting a shot from near perpendicular to the far left post and having it carom off the keeper into the upper left corner for his eighth goal of the season.

Muhlenberg's defense weathered a push by the Bullets in the final minutes to preserve the shutout victory.

Muhlenberg finished with a 23-10 advantage in shots and a 6-3 lead in corner kicks. Antonini finished with a match-high five shots, while Weseloh posted four.

Tabor, Shaffer, and junior Rich Kampert (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) each posted a pair of shots for the hosts and Hahn registered six saves.

Next up for the Bullets is long-time rival Franklin & Marshall College at home on Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m.
